| Ferrum
College is now offering a Health Sciences Major, bolstered by agreements
for further education at graduate institutions, to address the high
demand for skilled medical professionals. Students will be able to take
advantage of a three-year program at Ferrum before specializing at a
targeted institution in their field. Articulation agreements have been
formed with Shenandoah University’s Doctor of Pharmacy program in Shenandoah,
VA and the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Simmons College in
Boston, MA. Announcements on additional articulation agreements are
forthcoming.
Program Coordinator Dr. Jim Bier said,
“This is a cutting edge initiative in higher education. It was made
possible by the collaborative effort of our faculty and administration
and their counterparts at follow-on graduate and professional institutions,
and the excellent academic reputation established by our graduates in
these kinds of professional programs.”
Ferrum Director of Admissions,
Gilda Woods remarked, “We are excited about having this new program
to offer students who are interested in Ferrum. Together with our pre-med
program, we now have great opportunities for students interested in
a broad range of careers in health care. I am personally glad that Ferrum
is responding to the growing demand for healthcare providers both locally
and beyond.”
The Health Sciences Major features preparation
for Health Science careers such as Nursing/Nurse Practitioner, Physical
Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, Clinical Laboratory
Science, Osteopathic Medicine, Pharmacy, Veterinary Technology, Health
Science Research, Medical Technology, Nuclear Medicine, Podiatric Medicine,
Chiropractic Medicine, Medical Imaging, and similar professions in the
health sciences. This major includes the basic science courses and liberal
arts foundation at Ferrum College followed by specialization at another
institution in the specific professional career area. Depending on the
specific professional goals, many students are able to complete the
Ferrum College component of this major in three years. Ferrum College
will then confer the B.S. in Health Sciences after students earn the
required additional elective credit hours in their professional areas.
Articulation agreements for follow-on professional programs in this
major are generally limited to students with a B or better GPA in the
sciences and overall.
