With orientation and
the first stretch of classes behind them, the largest group of new students
since 1993 settled into campus life at Ferrum College this week. A recent
record of 397 new students enrolled at Ferrum this semester, bringing
total enrollment to 946. “This is one of the most exciting years in Ferrum's history, with important new academic initiatives and unprecedented construction and renovation. We are focused on enhancing all aspects of student life and improving student success. Our newest group of students, the largest in many years, will significantly contribute to the growing vitality of the Ferrum campus, and we are thrilled to welcome them," President Jennifer Braaten said. Gilda Woods, Director of Admissions remarked, “I have been associated with Ferrum for almost 30 years as a graduate, the parent of a recent graduate, and as an employee, I can’t think of a time when there was more energy and enthusiasm on our campus. Ferrum is taking a huge leap forward under Dr. Braaten’s leadership. Seeing all of the exciting new initiatives makes me want to enroll as a student again!” This freshmen class will also be participating in the Gateway Program, an exciting element of the recently announced Pathways to Success academic program. Freshmen will take the Gateway Seminar alongside their first semester courses, where they will be taught by their academic advisor and partake in a shared reading with the entire freshmen class. This year’s reading is Malcom Gladwell’s book on social change and movements entitled, The Tipping Point. Many faculty and staff outside of the Gateway program also read the book this summer, allowing for a campus-wide dialogue on the themes and concepts therein. Gateway Orientation included bus tours of Rocky Mount, VA via the Ferrum Express that culminated in a stop at Eagle Cinemas to watch the movie “Pay It Forward,” which relates to both The Tipping Point as well as Ferrum’s motto, “Not self, but others.” Ferrum College is a four-year, private, co-educational, liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Ferrum offers a choice of nationally recognized bachelor’s degree programs at a cost well below the national average for private colleges. For more information on Ferrum, visit www.ferrum.edu. |
