The Drama Department at Ferrum College is hosting the Tony Award winning play, “The Belle of Amherst,” performed by Mary Wadkins. She brings Emily Dickinson to life featuring her poems, letters, and life experiences. The only production of “The Belle of Amherst,” will be held on September 29, 2005 in the Sale Theatre of Schoolfield Hall on the Ferrum campus. The show is free although donations of non-perishable food items will be collected for the St. James Community Center.

Mary Wadkins has been portraying Emily Dickinson’s life across the country for the past eleven years. She is also a co-founder of the Playwrights Premiere Theatre, a theatre company dedicated to bringing new works throughout the commonwealth. “I heard so many good reviews of The Belle of Amherst that I decided we had to include Mary Wadkins in the Ferrum College Cultural Arts series,” said Wayne Bowman professor of theatre at Ferrum College.
