New UMC Bishop to present Higher Ed Award to Ethel Born at Ferrum College

    Mrs. Ethel Wolfe Born will receive the Virginia United Methodist Conference’s John Wesley Distinguished Education Award on October 21 at 10:30 a.m. in Vaughn Chapel on the Ferrum College campus. Newly assigned Virginia United Methodist Conference Bishop Charlene Payne Kammerer will present the award during a special service which will be open to the public.

      The John Wesley Distinguished Education Award honors an individual who has made a distinguished contribution to higher education in the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church.

      Born, a Ferrum College Trustee Emeritae, requested that she receive this award at the College. Born is a longtime and active supporter of the College, its Christian Ministries programs and Blue Ridge Institute and Museum. Past Ferrum College recipients include President Emeritus Dr. Jerry Boone.

      President Braaten remarked, "There is no way to overestimate the importance of Ethel Born's contributions to Ferrum College's mission. As a former Trustee and now Trustee Emerita, her generosity and support has been a shining demonstration of faith and trust that truly embodies our motto 'Not Self, But Others'."

      Virginia United Methodist Conference Bishop Charlene Payne Kammerer was assigned to the Virginia Conference and began her official duties Sept. 1, 2004.
