The St. James Community
Center of Ferrum, VA, has received a $5,000 Crisis Ministry Grant from
the Bonner Foundation to sustain the work of the Center. This meaningful
financial contribution was presented to the Center by Bonner Scholar
Director George Loveland and several Ferrum College Bonner Scholar students
to continue and deepen the St. James Community Center’s partnership
with the Ferrum Bonner Scholarship Program.
Located one mile from the Ferrum College
campus, the St. James Community Center offers Franklin County community
members clothing, food and friendship. Bonners assist volunteers with
organizing clothes, stocking the food pantry, and making sure the community
members feel welcome to the center. Ferrum College students, staff and
faculty also lead food and clothing drives throughout the semester for
the Children.
The Bonner Scholars Program, established
in 1990, provides scholarships to students who need help paying for
college and who have a commitment to strengthening their communities
through service. Today, there are more than 1,500 Bonner Scholars at
24 college campuses throughout the Southeast and Midwest. The Bonner
Scholar program offers each Bonner financial aid toward a college degree,
and an opportunity for an education enriched with service. Bonners Scholars
learn in lectures and labs, but they also learn by serving their communities,
by improving the world in which they live.
