Ferrum College’s undergraduate philosophy conference organized by Dr. Gary L. Angel and the Ferrum Philosophy Club will be held on April 24, 2004 from 10:00am until 4:30pm. The conference is built on the theme “Existence and the Sacred,” and will include a keynote address by Calvin O. Schrag. |

Schrag, George Ade Distinguished Professor of philosophy Emeritus at Purdue University, will deliver the keynote address, “Beyond Theism and Atheism toward the Sacred,” at 1:15pm. It will be based upon his book, God as Otherwise than Being, in which he urges that we rethink the language in terms of which we speak of God, and that we relocate our thought beyond metaphysics into a region of the gift which is in some sense otherwise than being. Schrag is the author of several other books including Existence and Freedom, Experience and Being, Resources of Rationality, and The Self after Postmodernity. The morning session will begin with a paper entitled “God and Infinite Regress” presented by Erika Langsjoen of Hollins University, and will be followed by “ The Sacred Source of the Creative Act” by Cameron Walker of Ferrum College. After Schrag’s Keynote address, Amanda Tipton, president of the Ferrum College Philosophy Club, will open the afternoon session with a paper entitled, “On the Forgotten Sanctity of the Shepherd,” followed by “Heidegger’s Presence-at-hand as an Intersection with Mahayana Buddhism,” presented by Brian Murphy of James Madison University. Papers are still being accepted for presentation and subsequent publication in Ferrum College’s online philosophy journal. For further information contact Dr. Gary L. Angel at glangel@ferrum.edu, or 540.365.4343. Ferrum College is a four-year, private,
