Ferrum College will offer two continuing education courses for current Franklin County Public School teachers. The courses Math 320: Topics in Mathematics and English 301: Literature for Children and Adolescents will qualify for re-certification points or content endorsement. Initial course rate is $500.00 for Franklin County Teachers for these two Continuing Education Courses only. Regular Continuing Education rate is $750.00 for 3-credit course. Both courses will be held at the Franklin County School Board Office in Rocky Mount, VA. Math 320: Topics in Mathematics will be taught by Dr. Gregory N. Killough on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for 13 weeks, beginning January 27, 2004. It will qualify as three semester hours of credit. The initial course rate is $500.00 for Franklin County Teachers. The course is designed for students seeking a more advanced and thorough treatment of the topics generally associated with mathematics for liberal arts students. This course provides teachers of school mathematics the background to confidently and comfortably present the mathematics in the school curriculum. English 301: Literature for Children and Adolescents will be taught by Ms. Tammy Wood on Wednesdays from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for 13 weeks, beginning January 28, 2004. It will qualify as three semester hours of credit. The initial course rate is $500.00 for Franklin County Teachers. This course introduces students to the wide range of literature appropriate for children and teenagers, and explores ways of using some of this range to develop deep interests and solid habits in reading. It emphasizes modes of storytelling and connections between texts and interpretive reading and dramatic performance. Besides introducing elements of literary analysis, it analyzes the place of controversial, or morally challenging, texts for young people between the primary and secondary grades. For more information, please contact Dr. Virginia Stuart, Ferrum College Director of Teacher Education, at (540) 365-4401. Registration deadline is Monday, January 19, 2004.
