Ferrum College’s Dean of Students, Dave Newcombe, has been elected President-Elect of the Virginia Association of Student Personnel Administrators (VASPA).

VASPA is a voluntary organization for the student affairs educators at two-year and four-year colleges and universities in Virginia. They gather once a year for a professional conference with educational sessions that enable members to grow, learn, and develop professionally and individually. VASPA also holds the annual conference with Virginia Association of College and University Housing Officers in Wintergreen, VA. VASPA also holds a Student Leadership Conference annually for Student Leaders across the State. Conferences consist of many different committees: awards, historian, hospitality, keynote speaker, meals, program, registration, vendors, etc. About 250 professionals and graduate students in higher education through out Virginia attend the conference.

Newcombe has been part of this association for 18 years. “It is a lot of fun and can be a stress release for some folks. I enjoy being part of the group because of new relationships formed and getting to grow as a professional,” said Newcombe. Newcombe was elected in November 2003, to the position of President-Elect. He will have this position for one year. He will then be the president for a year, and following that Newcombe will be the past-president for one year. As President-Elect he has to participate in events, attend three meetings to plan the conference, attend conferences, observe how the association is ran, and run meetings if the president is absent. As President, he will be in charge of the association. As Past-President, he will run the conference. Newcombe stated “It’s pretty much an honor to be elected by your peers and colleagues at other Virginia institutions of higher learning. I feel humbled.”
