SENATOR HAWKINS TO SPEAK AT
FERRUM COLLEGE COMMENCEMENT

       Virginia State Senator Charles Hawkins will speak to the graduating class of 2004 on Saturday, May 8 at 10:30 a.m. on the front lawn of Ferrum College.

      “Senator Hawkins' leadership in the Virginia Senate and on the Virginia Tobacco Commission is an exemplary expression of the Ferrum College motto ‘Not Self But Others,’" says Dr. Jennifer L. Braaten, president of Ferrum College. "I admire the Senator's commitment to the citizens of Southside Virginia, and appreciate his consistent message that economic renewal will come most easily when we have a better educated work force. We are honored that Senator Hawkins has agreed to speak to our graduates during this year's commencement."

      Hawkins, a Senator from the 19th District since 1992, also served in the House of Delegates from 1982 to 1992. As a member of the Senate, Hawkins serves on committees for Finance, General Laws, Privileges and Elections, Rules and serves as Chairman for the committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources. Senator Hawkins also serves as Chairman of the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission, a 31-member body created by the 1999 General Assembly.
