Ferrum students Luke Dye and Robert Major presented posters at the Virginia Blue Ridge Section of the American Chemical Society's High School and Undergraduate Poster Session at Radford University on April 14.

Luke Dye, a freshman, presented his research about an ancient chemical weapon in his poster entitled "An Experimental Analysis of Greek Fire." Luke performed his research as a Practicum course with Dr. Jason Powell.

Jason Powell, Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Physics said of Dye, “He came in his first semester very excited about chemistry and applying what he has learned to all of his courses. Dr. Richard Smith [Professor of History at Ferrum] talked about Greek Fire in his Western Civilization class and Luke wanted to know how it worked, so we designed experiments to find out. It turns out that most recent descriptions are incorrect about how Greek Fire really works.”

Robert Major, a sophomore, presented his poster, "Atomistic Simulation of Hysteresis Behavior in Ni-Ti Shape-Memory Alloy." Robert won a Virginia Academy of Science Student Research Grant last fall and will present the results of his research at the May meeting of that organization. His work was also supervised by Dr. Jason Powell and with the guidance of Dr. Steve Galinaitis.

“Robert has worked independently to learn a great deal about a very complicated process. The insights we gained through his work have brought us closer to an atomic-level understanding of the behavior of the shape-memory wires Dr. Galinaitis has been studying,” said Powell.
