The first three students of Ferrum College’s Boone Honors Program will be graduating on May 8, 2004. Crystal Hutchens, Sabrina Tribbett and Sandra Via are graduating at the top of their class after completing their study in only three years.

The Boone Honors Program, directed by Dr. Dave Howell, is a liberal arts program for academically advanced students that promotes the exploration of multiple disciplines. Students participating in the Boone Honors Program take courses outside of required courses. In addition, the students have to “honors” enrich twelve credits of their other courses by adding extra components, such as papers or projects. The program’s namesake is attributed to former President Jerry Boone and his wife Shirley, who retired in 2002.

Sabrina Tribbett, a graduating senior involved with the honors program, is from Pocahontas County, WV. Tribbett is majoring in English and minoring in Religion. “It’s been very enriching and has expanded my knowledge in art, history, religion, and science,” Tribbett said of the program.

Sandra Via of Patrick County, VA who also participated in the honors program said, “It’s helped us prepare for our future endeavors and allowed us to broaden our perspectives of various fields.” Via is a political science major with a minor in history. She plans to attend law school after graduation.

Through the Boone Honors Program Tribbett and Via were able to visit Oxford University in England during the summer of 2002. They both participated in tutorials on Shakespeare as well as a 5-week lecture series on British culture. Tribbett and Via said that the honors program offered them a more well rounded education and bettered their learning experience at Ferrum College.
