The Horticulture Program within the Life Sciences Division of Ferrum College is offering a Residential Landscape Design course in March. The course will be taught through the newly launched Continuing and Professional Studies/Adult Education Program, directed by Jackie Scruggs. It will be held in the Smith Mountain Lake community at the Moneta/Smith Mountain Lake branch of the Bedford Public Library System. The course will last 4 weeks and meet the first 4 Tuesdays of March – March 2, 9, 16 and 23 from 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.. The fee is $125/person. The Residential Landscape Design course is tailored for homeowners who are encouraged to use their own properties as case studies in the class. Using their own residences, homeowners will be guided through the basic principles of landscape design, how to conduct a site inventory, create a base map, develop design concepts, and draw their designs. Class members will see numerous examples of residential landscape designs, visit completed designs in the local area, and compile resources related to their design projects. The course will be taught by Trenda Carter Leavitt, Adjunct Professor of Landscape Design at Ferrum College and Principal of Beechgrove Design, a firm offering CAD, graphic and landscape design services. Leavitt holds a Masters of Landscape Architecture from Virginia Tech and a Bachelors of Fine Art from Roanoke College. She is a member of Sigma Lambda Alpha - International Landscape Architecture Honor Society and The American Society of Landscape Architects. She has taught landscape architecture at Oklahoma State University, Virginia Tech and Ferrum College, and has completed numerous residential designs bordering Smith Mountain Lake. Ferrum College's website: www.ferrum.edu\garden\ details what the Landscape Design & Management Team accomplished in Fall 2003 under the direction of Leavitt, Dr. Bob Pohlad, and Dana Newton of Ferrum College. For further information and to register please contact Leavitt at 540 874 5459 or tleavitt@ferrum.edu or the Life Sciences Division at 540.365.4370. Ferrum President Dr. Jennifer L. Braaten established the adult education program as a priority and included it among the first 20 initiatives she implemented at the College. “Today's citizens recognize that learning is a life-long process. Our careers demand it. Our marketability demands it. But most importantly our life satisfaction demands it,” says Braaten. Braaten became the 10th president of Ferrum College in July 2002.
