In their 14th consecutive national bid at the 2003 SIFE USA National Exposition, held in Kansas City, Mo., May 11-13, Ferrum College’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team, learned the value of good business practices when they brought home an additional $1,750, to supplement the $2,000 they have won this year. Over the last four years alone, the team has won more than $16,000 in cash for their business and entrepreneurial projects.

The winnings, which were awarded by the national SIFE organization, have been used to launch new projects, travel to competitions, and educate the group and fellow students about business practices.

Winning projects for the team include business etiquette classes for college students, a Junior Chamber of Commerce for high school students, the Money Masters educational workbook and classes for elementary students, and the Reality Store, which, through a games of choices, teaches middle school students how their educational achievements affect their earning power.

At the national competition, the team won $1,000 as the third place winner in the Financial Independence Month competition. Each month SIFE sponsors a business related contest.

The team also won $750 as the second runner up in its league of eight schools, which included Pepperdine and North Dakota State.

Prior to the nationals, the team had won $2,000 in SIFE regional competitions this year. For more information, please visit www.ferrum.edu or www.sife.org.

Dr. Delia Heck, assistant professor of business and Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellow, advises the team. This is her first year in this role.
