As the world awaits the release of Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix, Potter fans and foes alike are debating trivial details about and complex issues within the fifth installment in the J.K. Rowling series. Dr. Lana A. Whited, editor of The Ivory Tower and Harry Potter: Perspectives on a Literary Phenomenon, delves into the questions that fans and critics of the series alike are asking.

Through her research on the Harry Potter series and phenomenon, Whited is prepared to discuss these subjects:

• Has commercial success ruined the Harry Potter series – or made it better?

• Is Harry the Superman of the ’00s?

• How do the books measure under a feminist viewpoint?

• Does the series reinforce social problems, such as prejudice?

• Why has the series led more adolescent boys to read?

• Why do juvenile delinquents relate to Harry Potter?

• Are conservative religious claims that the books are harmful to children true?

• Is the magic headed in a darker direction?

• Will Harry Potter live on with Beowulf and Odysseus?

• What happens to the Potter fans after the final installment?

Whited learned firsthand the power Potter wields when she was forced to retitle her book to appease the series’ publisher. To speak with Whited on these subjects, contact her at (540) 365-4334 or via e-mail at lwhited@ferrum.edu. For additional information, visit www.ferrum.edu/ivorytower.

The Ivory Tower examines the first four books. Whited plans to look critically at The Order of the Phoenix for her second book of essays, which will come out after the seventh and final Harry Potter book is released.

Whited has been a Potter resource for media ranging from Agence France Presse to The Australian to broadcast network affiliates. She is also a popular Potter resource at academic conferences. She will be participating in a Harry Potter panel at “Nimbus 2003: A Harry Potter Symposium,” the first all Harry Potter conference, which will be held July 17-20 in Orlando, Fla. Whited is currently organizing a Harry Potter conference for high school students and scholars in November 2003.
