As muggles around the world eagerly await the release of Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix, literary scholars and Potter fans celebrate the reprinting of the first collection of critical essays on the Harry Potter series. The Ivory Tower and Harry Potter: Perspectives on a Literary Phenomenon (University of Missouri Press), edited by Dr. Lana A. Whited, and published in December 2002, is a scarcity in bookstores– where scholars and fans are snapping it up.

The first run of the book was 30% larger than academic presses typically print. In less than six months, the volume went to a reprinting and will be available in July. It is available through major booksellers, including amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com

The Ivory Tower is a collection of 16 critical essays on the series, written by scholars from Great Britain, the United States, and Canada. The essays cover topics including perspectives on gender issues related to Hermione Granger; Harry’s relation to the epic, mythological, and folkloric heroes; and the modification of words and their meanings in foreign translations.

Other topics include fan communities, moral development, and commercialization of the series.

The idea for the book germinated during a 2000 Children’s Literature Association conference when Whited presented a paper during a session on Harry Potter. She expected the session to attract 30-40, but instead there were around 100 attendees.
