As students play the parts of Security Council members in Ferrum College’s annual Model United Nations, they will attempt to deal with the issues of weapons inspections in Iraq and the North Korean nuclear program. To add a real-life, global perspective to their debate, Dr. Philip Moeller, consultant to the World Bank, will speak on “Social and Environmental Safeguards In Promoting Sustainable Development.” The convergence of imaginary global power and real world issues will take place on Friday, March 21, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Sigmon Recital Hall, Grousbeck Music Center.

Moeller is currently a consultant to the World Bank on institutional development, change management, and monitoring social and environmental safeguards for Bank-funded programs. He is also currently consulting on anti-corruption and institutional development programs in Eastern Europe.

He spent many years working in Africa, assisting in the independence of Zimbabwe and Namibia and helping reduce the dependence of landlocked central African states on the country of South Africa. Moeller also has worked with Asian and Central American projects.

In addition, Moeller takes an active role in the Lutheran Church (ECLA) at both local and national levels. He holds a Ph.D. from the School of International Service of American University.

Ferrum’s annual Model U.N. Security Council session takes place on Saturday, March 22, beginning at 10:00 am in lower Franklin Hall.

Observers are welcome at either session. For further information, contact faculty sponsor Dr. Michael R. Trochim at (540) 365-4403.
