Since 1993, the United Methodist Educational Foundation has recognized one exceptional faculty member annually, selected from United Methodist schools across the United States. Foundation executive vice-president Cheryl B. Davis will present this year’s Outstanding Educator award to the 10th winner, Dr. Peter G. Crow, Ferrum College professor of English and chair of the Language. Literature, Philosophy, and Religion Division, on Wednesday, April 30, at 1:30 p.m. in 106 Garber Hall, Ferrum College. The recognition will include an artistic replica of the Cokesbury Bell and a $5,000 cash award. Crow, who plans to take a year off to pen a book about the way the Appalachian community of St. Paul, Va., is transforming itself from a hardscrabble coal town robbed of natural resources to an environmentally-friendly sustainable economy, will use the award as a financial cushion while writing the nonfiction work. |

In 1997-98, Crow conceived the idea of in-depth studies of the Appalachian region. Using an interdisciplinary, team-taught approach, the Appalachian Cluster classes incorporate Appalachian regionalism into the curriculum of select literature, sociology, environmental science, and history courses. Crow’s success in the integrated, regionally-based curriculum led to his selection as the host of a 2002 National Endowment for the Humanities summer institute to train other college educators in the method. |

In his nomination letter, Vice President and Dean of the College Dr. Richard E. Sours wrote, “We have no one who has single-handedly raised the reputation of the college the way Pete Crow has by his leadership." All 124 United Methodist two- and four-year preparatory schools, colleges and universities could submit nominees, who must make an impact on their students, peers, academic institution, community, and church. |

Crow says his award points not to his own accomplishments, but to the collective quality of the entire Ferrum faculty. “This is a reflection of the faculty body…the College is being recognized for a caliber of teaching that’s exceptional.” Ferrum College is a four-year, private, co-educational, liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Ferrum offers a choice of nationally recognized bachelor’s degree programs at a cost well below the national average for private colleges.
