| On Saturday, May 10 at 10:30 a.m., 139 men and women will graduate Ferrum College in a commencement ceremony led by Dr. Jennifer L. Braaten, who is presiding over her first graduation as Ferrum’s 10th president. In the front lawn ceremony, seniors from 15 states will be receiving bachelors degrees. |
|
The senior class selected Kristin Marie Cardinale of Charlotte Hall, Md, as its senior class speaker. Cardinale is an Environmental Science and Pre-Professional Science double major with chemistry and biology minors. A campus leader, Cardinale has served on the Student Government Association cabinet, as the Student Activities Vice President, and as a community advisor and head resident. |
|
The Honorable Gerald Baliles, Virginia’s governor from 1986-1990, will deliver the commencement keynote address. Baliles, a partner in the Richmond-based law firm Hunton & Williams, heads its International Practice Group. He has established a strong educational reform record through his public and private work |

Awards to be announced at the event include the James T. Catlin, Jr., Citizenship Award, the Arthur S. Owens Leadership Award, and the Senior Academic Excellence Award, which are awarded to students, and the Exemplary Faculty Award and the Cheatham Fellowship, given to faculty. |
The event will remain largely unchanged, other than the addition of Ferrum’s Board of Trustees to the platform party. Following the event, graduates will process through two rows of faculty and staff, who will wish them well on their continuing journey. This tradition parallels the students’ experience as freshman, when they were welcomed in the same fashion. Braaten, Ferrum’s first woman president, has initiated a number of College changes and enhancements. Evidence of the campus’s progress will be evident from the commencement grounds, which abut a construction zone of an addition to Stanley Library. Ferrum College is a four-year, private, co-educational, liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Ferrum offers a choice of nationally recognized bachelor’s degree programs at a cost well below the national average for private colleges.
