“Governor Baliles has been a noteworthy leader and statesman for the Commonwealth of Virginia for many years and is a true believer in higher education and its benefits,” says Dr. Jennifer L. Braaten, president of Ferrum College. “His life of service is consistent with Ferrum’s motto of ‘Not Self, But Others’ because he is focused, down to earth, and willing to continually give of himself to others. His leadership in Virginia is unequalled, and he continues to remember his roots in Southwest Virginia in many positive ways.” |
As governor of Virginia from 1986-1990, Baliles worked vigorously on education reform. He later helped establish and now chairs The Patrick County Education Foundation to prepare Patrick County residents for the 21st century by helping them attain higher education, skills, and training. Baliles has chaired several committees and coalitions, including the Commission on Educational Quality for the Southern Regional Education Board, National Governors’ Association, and Public Broadcasting Service. In addition, he served as Virginia’s Attorney General from 1982-1985 and as a member of the House of Delegates from 1976-1982. He is currently a partner at the Richmond-based law firm International Practice Group of Hunton & Williams, where his practice focuses on areas of aviation and environmental law. Ferrum College is a four-year, private, co-educational, liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
