DIVISION OF BUSINESS, COMPUTER SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICSComputer Science Academic Award This award is presented to the student with the highest GPA of the students graduating with a Computer Science degree. This year we have three students who have maintained GPA's that are so close that the faculty could not make a distinction. Therefore, they are presenting this award to three students: Jeremy W. Poling from Amherst, VA. Jeremy is a double major in Math and Computer Science. He has consistently maintained a very high GPA in Computer Science while carrying many other responsibilities in the department. Christina R. McBride from Glade Hill, VA. Christina is also a double major in Math and Computer Science. She too has maintained a high GPA while balancing her involvement in Ferrum athletics and the rigorous education minor. Tim Abner from Rocky Mount, VA. Tim is a Computer Science major and mathematical science minor. He has worked very hard to maintain an excellent GPA while working an almost full-time job. _____________________ Computer Science Achievement Award This award is presented to the Computer Science graduate who has shown persistence in overcoming obstacles while achieving academic excellence in her major. This award is presented to Heather D. Bowles from Covington, VA, in recognition of her diligence, hard work, and academic achievement as she balanced being a new mother with working three days a week and being a full-time student. _______________________ Decision Science Award The Decision Science Award is presented this year to Jason D. Byrd from Collinsville, VA for his ability to integrate quantitative methods of computer technology to achieve the solution to business problems. ______________________________ Finance Award - The Finance Award is presented to April N. English from Goodview, VA, for outstanding analytical achievement in the complicated and intricate area of finance. ______________________________ The next award is the Hamblin Accounting Award, named in recognition of Ms. Allison Hamblin, the first Ferrum College accounting major to successfully complete the CPA exam. It is presented to the accounting major who has best demonstrated mastery of technical accounting principles and excellence in overall academic achievement. This year the recipient is Brian J. Carter from Henry, VA. _____________________ Information Systems Academic Award This award is presented to the student who has the highest GPA of the students graduating with an Information Systems degree. This year we have a good problem in that we also have three students in Information Systems who have maintained GPA's that are so close the faculty could not make a distinction. Therefore, they are presenting this award to three students: Wymann Spencer from Goode, VA. Jessica R. Foley from Ferrum, VA. Jason M. Harris from Colonial Heights, VA. Jason represented Ferrum at the Marcus Student Research Conference where he presented a paper on his internship. Management Award - Management is the process of achieving desired results through efficient utilization of human and material resources. This year a student has excelled in her ability to analyze complex situations and problems and arrive at sound recommendations. This year's award goes to Shannon E. Carlson from Alexandria, VA. ______________________ Marketing Award This award is presented for academic excellence and leadership in her business major. This year's recipient of the Marketing Award is Hope M. Easley from Chatham, VA. She has consistently excelled in both grade achievement and the ability to understand and apply the principles of marketing. __________________________________ Mathematics Award This award is presented to an upperclassman in mathematics who has an excellent academic record and has demonstrated a substantial involvement in the mathematics program. This year the award is presented to Jeremy W. Poling from Amherst, VA. Jeremy is a senior with a 3.9 grade point average in mathematics and for the last two years has been a student research assistant in the mathematics department.
Mathematics Achievement Award This award is presented to a freshman or sophomore mathematics major who has demonstrated significant academic achievement in the mathematics major. This year the award is presented to Daniel D. DeJarnette from Rustburg, VA. Dan is a sophomore with a 3.7 grade point average in mathematics. In addition to his academic work, Dan is also a student research assistant and this summer he will be working on the development of a micro-positioning control system. DIVISION OF HISTORY, POLITICAL SCIENCE, AND THE ARTS Art Student of the Year Award - This award is given to honor a student who has shown outstanding leadership and dedication in art. This year there are two recipients of the 2002-2003 Art Student of the Year Award. They are Jennifer L. Ramer from Concord, NC and Sandra P. Southard from Mechanicsville, VA. Drama Achievement Award There are two recipients of the Drama Achievement Award for 2002-2003. They are Tony T. Pica from Yorktown, VA and Sylvia M. Woodyard from Swords Creek, VA. ___________________ Frank Benjamin Hurt Award is given to a senior in Political Science who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and citizenship, and thereby contributed to the growth of the Ferrum College community. This year's recipient is Joanna L. Bosik from Wilmington, DE. _________________________ Ferrum students participate annually in a model United Nations Security Council session in order to build their skills in research, analysis, negotiation, and diplomacy. The outstanding delegate and delegation receive awards for excellence. Model United Nations-Most Effective Delegate- This year's recipient is Joanna L. Bosik from Wilmington, DE for her representation of China. ______________________________ Model United Nations-Most Effective Delegation- This year's recipients are Matthew W. Scruggs from Hurt, VA and Philip Wohlrab from Buena Vista, VA for their representation of the United States. ________________________________ Outstanding Music Student Award - The 2003 Music Award is being presented to a student who has made outstanding contributions to the department as a member of the choral, handbell, and instrumental ensembles. The faculty are pleased to acknowledge D. Justin Hodges from Rocky Mount, VA as this year's music award recipient. ________________________ Outstanding Undergraduate Scholar in History Award - This award is presented to a senior history major who has demonstrated outstanding ability in historical research, critical historical analysis, and the writing of history. This year's recipient is Brandi R. Kent from Union Hall, VA.
DIVISION OF LANGUAGE, LITERATURE, PHILOSOPHY AND RELIGIONEric Lee Baker Award for the Outstanding Student in EnglishEach year the faculty in the department of English nominates and votes on candidates whose work in English has shown exceptional dedication to high standards. The winner is awarded the Eric Lee Baker Award for the Outstanding Student in English. This year's winner is Laurie A. Borslien from Chesapeake, VA. __________________________________ Ferrum-Pskov Exchange Award In recognition of the ongoing exchange with the Pedagogical Institute of Pskov, Russia, special awards are being presented for both the fall and spring semesters. For the fall semester, we would like to recognize Irina Teteneva from Pskov, Russia. For the spring semester we would like to recognize Irina G. Loutsenko from Pskov, Russia. Irina is receiving two framed certificates today, one for herself and the other she will be taking back to Russia for the other Irina. Thank you, for your friendship, your help, your excellent scholarship, and your leadership. __________________ C.P. Minnick Award - This award is given annually by the Philosophy/Religion faculty to a graduating senior who has exhibited exemplary character and academic achievement. This year there are two recipients. They are Jason L. Bryant from Stuart, VA and Jacob N. Graham from Roanoke, VA. ______________________ Outstanding Student of Russian Award The recipient of the Outstanding Student of Russian Award is Katie M. Andrews from Apple Valley, MN. _____________________ Powell Assistantship in Philosophy Award The Powell Assistantship in Philosophy is given annually to rising junior or senior philosophy majors who are exceptional students, clear and creative thinkers, and who show promise for careers in philosophy. This award carries a stipend of $1,000 and is possible because of the generous contribution to the Philosophy Program by Robert W. Powell after whom the award is named. This year's recipient is Amanda J. Tipton from Frankford, WV. ___________________ Spanish Award The Spanish Award goes annually to a student who has exhibited a superior understanding of Spanish during his or her years at Ferrum College. This year the recipient of the Outstanding Student of Spanish Award is Lorie A. Holland from Ferrum, VA. DIVISION OF LIFE SCIENCES Agriculture Award This award is presented for superior academic achievement in agriculture. This year the Agriculture Award goes to Amanda M. Morton from Naugatuck, CT. Biology Award - This award is presented for superior academic achievement in Biology. The recipient of the Biology Award this year is Curtis L. Bumgardner from Mechanicsville, VA. _________________ CRC Press General Chemistry Achievement Award This award is presented for superior academic achievement in chemistry. The recipient of the CRC Press General Chemistry Achievement Award is Abby M. Rusnak from Colorado Springs, CO. Abby could not be here today because she is participating in a cheerleading competition in Williamsburg. ________________________ Environmental Science Award - This award is presented for superior academic achievement in environmental science. The recipient of the Environmental Science Award is Daniel J. Gammons of Salem, VA. _____________________ Horticulture Award This award is presented for superior academic achievement. The recipient of the Horticulture Award is Erich J. Henschel from Esmont, VA. Pre-Professional Science Award This award is presented for superior academic achievement. The recipient of the Pre-Professional Science Award is Whitney R. DeJarnette from Lynchburg, VA. ________________ Outstanding Student in Life Sciences Award- This award is given to an outstanding graduating senior in the Life Sciences Division. The recipient this year is Patricia L. Moyer from Rocky Mount, VA. DIVISION OF SOCIAL SCIENCES Jane Addams Social Work Achievement Award - The Ferrum College Social Work Program has the privilege of honoring two students who exhibited exceptional commitment to social work as a chosen profession. This year's recipients are Sharon Flanagan from Nokesville, VA and Billy V. Hayes from Rocky Mount, VA. _________________ Dr. Betty N. Bailey Silver Weaver Award - This award is given to the Education graduate who demonstrates creativity in the classroom. This year's recipient is Mary Anne Poling from Virginia Beach, VA. ________________________ Delta Kappa Gamma Outstanding Woman in Education Award The Virginia Iota Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International sponsors an outstanding woman in education award. This year's recipient is Amanda B. Ilardi from Rocky Mount, VA. _____________________________________ Susan E. Homestead Outstanding Criminal Justice Graduating Senior Award - This award is presented to the senior criminal justice major with the highest grade point average and a record of service to Ferrum College. This year there is a tie for the award. The two awardees are Lorie A. Holland from Ferrum, VA and Linda M. McKinney, also from Ferrum. _______________________ Outstanding Recreation Major Award The student selected for this honor has demonstrated academic achievement and leadership abilities that serve as a model for others to follow. This year's recipient is Jamie L. Hargis from Falls Church, VA. ___________________________________ Outstanding Student in Psychology Award - This award is made annually by the faculty in psychology to the student who has brought honor to the department, the college, and discipline of psychology through outstanding accomplishments and exemplary character demonstrated throughout their enrollment at Ferrum College. Factors in selection include outstanding academic and intellectual performance, excellent personal and professional ethics and conduct, meaningful involvement and service in campus and community, and demonstration of high potential for future contributions to the discipline of psychology. This year's recipient is Sarah R. Roberts from Rocky Mount, VA. Sigma Psi Delta Psychology Club Award - While all levels of participation help make campus clubs successful, occasionally contributions from individual members stand out as having provided a foundation for the entire club's success. One individual did so in the Sigma Psi Delta Psychology Club this year by demonstrating flexibility in leadership, creativity in programming, and reliability in all undertakings. This year's recipient of this special recognition is Rebekah C. Williams from Stuart, VA. ________________________________ The Charles A. and Marion C. Skinner Award for Excellence in Education This award goes to the outstanding students in the Ferrum College Teacher Education Program. This year's recipients are: Melody L. McIlvain from Milton, DE, for elementary education Michael J. Menard from Ferrum, VA, and Kevin S. Embick from Jupiter, FL, for secondary education Julie M. Burton from Nathalie, VA, for all-level education Award: Melody, Michael, Kevin, and Julie are receiving engraved plaques and books. In addition, their names, certification levels and year, will be engraved on a permanent plaque which hangs in the Teacher Education office and reads:

CHRYSALIS Commendation - This award goes to the editor of Chrysalis, Randall "Randy" Simpson, from Harrisonburg, VA, for his ability to find the dark humor in every commonplace event and the right words to make it into art. IRON BLADE Commendation The Communications Board is pleased to recognize and thank the editor-in-chief of the Iron Blade for 2002-2003, Laurie A. Borslien of Chesapeake, VA. ________________ Cub Award The Cub Award is named after traditional journalism slang for a rookie reporter. This award is presented to a first-year journalism student who, in the opinion of the advisor and the editor-in-chief, shows exceptional promise for a professional career in journalism. This year, the recipient of the Cub Award is Jessica L. Hylton from Danville, VA. ____________________ The Most Valuable Staff Member Award is staff-selected. This year, the member of The Iron Blade staff who, in the opinion of her peers, has made the strongest, most consistent contribution to The Iron Blade is Laurie A. Borslien from Chesapeake, VA. Laurie is receiving a framed certificate and a book entitled, "Where the Girls Are: Growing Up Female with the Mass Media", by Susan J. Douglas. WFFC RADIO STATION Commendation - This award is presented to John M. Wojtowicz from Reading, PA for his dedication and hard work as Manager of the WFFC radio station. ___________________ The WFFC staff has selected Jayson A. Coponiti from Virginia Beach as New Staff Member of the Year. __________________ This year the staff of WFFC has selected Phillip A. Copley from Hampton, VA as Senior Staff Member of the Year. _____________________ WFFC presents a "DJ of the Year " Award to a member of each class. Panther Production Awards: Erik Hannah Award This award is presented to a graduating senior who has given unselfishly of her time and effort and has achieved the ideals that Erik left behind for members to follow. This year's winner has truly done just that with her dedication to the club. She has relished everything the club had to offer and gave so much back. This year's recipient of the Erik Hannah Award is Sylvia M. Woodyard from Swords Creek, VA. __________________ Best New Pantherite Award This award goes to two first-year members who have gone beyond all expectations and become friends and leaders in the organization. The first recipients of this new award have not only met club requirements, but also excelled at them in and out of Panther Productions. They are Phil "Wild Thing" Robertson from Ashburn, VA and Ryan "Boots" Walker from Fairfax Station, VA. _____________________ Panther Pride Award This award goes to a member of Panther Productions who has, and who shares, the spirit of Panther Productions. This year's winner has consistently made the group smile, while having gone out of his way to try the patience of the club's president with his outrageous behavior. Yet he is one who makes the entire club smile with his playful wit, bizarre antics, and comforting charm. He has rightly earned this award for he has truly exhibited panther pride. The first winner of the Panther Pride Award is Kevin M. Mausehundfrom Afton, VA. THE NEXT TWO AWARDS ARE ONES FOR WHICH THE RECIPIENTS ARE NOMINATED AND VOTED ON BY THE FACULTY. LILLIE WARWICK SLAVEN AWARD - This award was established on May 13, 1969, by a group of friends and alumni of the college in memory of Lillie Warwick Slaven, a former member of the faculty at Ferrum College. It is awarded to the student who exemplifies the ideals of the ministerial profession and outstanding student leadership at Ferrum College. This year's recipient is Jason Lee Bryant from Stuart, VA.
