As the first step in the launch of its new Continuing and Professional Studies/Adult Education Program, Ferrum College has hired a director of the program to conceptualize and implement a plan that may ultimately offer community classes, bachelor’s completion opportunities, and a master’s program both on campus and in satellite locations. Ferrum President Dr. Jennifer L. Braaten established the adult education program as a priority and included it among the first 20 initiatives she implemented at the College. “Today’s citizens recognize that learning is a life-long process. Our careers demand it. Our marketability demands it. But most importantly our life satisfaction demands it,” says Braaten. Braaten became the 10th president of Ferrum College in July 2002. |

Mrs. Jackie R. Scruggs, of Roanoke, has been named the director of the Continuing and Professional Studies/Adult Education Program. Scruggs most recently served Bluefield College as its Roanoke Regional Director of adult and continuing education. She also served American Electric Power for 30 years, before her retirement as the human resources manager in 2001. |

After completing her Associate of Arts at Virginia Western Community College, Scruggs received her Bachelor of Arts from Mary Baldwin College. She completed her Master of Arts at Hollins University and is currently pursuing her doctorate from Kennedy Western University. Scruggs was designated a Certified Professional in Human Resources in 1994. Scruggs has taught as an adjunct faculty member at Averett University and Bluefield College, served on the boards of the Roanoke Higher Education Center and alumni board of Mary Baldwin College, and participated in a number of education committees for Roanoke City and Roanoke County schools. Scruggs also has been active in numerous civic groups, including American Red Cross, United Way, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. “ Jackie brings a unique balance of higher education and corporate experience, allowing her to truly appreciate the needs, expectations, and desires of adult students. She has first hand knowledge of the joys and challenges of continuing one’s education as an adult, and her awareness will allow her to better serve those individuals who are eager to enhance their lives through additional education,” says Braaten. Ferrum College is a four-year, private, co-educational, liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Ferrum offers a choice of nationally recognized bachelor’s degree programs at a cost well below the national average for private colleges.
