Two area music professors will display their own musical talents at Ferrum College. Deborah Kemper, professor of flute at Roanoke College, and Erma Rose, professor of music at Ferrum College, will join forces on September 17, to present “Baroque Delights with Irish Desserts,” an ensemble of Baroque period (1600-1750) sonatas. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Vaughn Chapel, on the campus of Ferrum College.

The program will feature varied sonatas for flute and piano by well-known masters Bach and Handel, as well as lesser-known composers such as Marcello and Reid.

The duo’s repertoire will consist of songs by Francis Hopkinson, an early-American patriot. Hopkinson was one of the only American composers of music during the Baroque period.

Kemper and Rose will also perform a selection of Irish favorites and “The Last Rose of Summer.”

Kemper holds advanced degrees in flute performance and has studied performance and teaching methods for flute in Japan. She has performed with the Richmond Symphony and the Spartanburg Symphony. She has held teaching positions at University of Richmond and Radford University.

Rose completed her doctorate, with emphasis in vocal coaching and accompanying, at the University of North Texas where she also studied harpsichord. She has accompanied choirs and solo recitalists since the age of ten. While at Ferrum, she has been the music director and accompanist for musicals both at the College and in Roanoke. Rose also directs the Franklin County Community Chorus.
