program overview
Ferrum College created
the Teacher Education program during a time of educational reform.
Research about effective teaching guides the program design and
implementation. Ferrum College developed the Teacher Education program in collaboration with area schools to ensure its practicality.
The program consists of a spiraling, comprehensive course sequence in THE PROFESSION OF TEACHING. The course segments
include: Issues in Education through Technology, Foundations, Developmental and Diagnostic Reading,
The Language Arts, Content Area Reading, Strategies, and The Student Teaching, and Synthesis
Experience. Together, the segments build a strong, coherent base for the pre-professional teacher by providing models of best practice. Admission to the program requires application, interview, and success during the first course segment.
The program features a strong experience base that includes at least three
semesters of classroom experience in public schools before student
teaching. The program emphasizes active learning; students apply what they
have learned as they facilitate activities in the public schools. They
design and teach their own lessons, analyze classroom interaction, and
evaluate the outcomes. Professors and peers challenge, motivate, and encourage
students to be effective teachers. |
