Students desiring to be licensed at the elementary level must major
in Liberal Arts and minor in education. Students pursuing a secondary
license may major in one of fifteen academic endorsement areas and
minor in education. Students seeking an all-level license may major
in Art, Dramatic and Theater Arts, Physical Education, Russian or
Spanish and minor in Education.
The Ferrum Teacher Education Program prepares students to become
teachers in today's restructured classroom. The program challenges
them to think about curriculum issues, approaches to classroom management,
and alternatives to traditional assessment. They are asked to reflect
on current educational policy and to take and defend a stance on
such matters. Students make data-driven decisions, consider effective
ways to reach and involve learners and develop their own philosophy
of education that is constantly examined and refined.
The Ferrum Program produces teachers who believe that all students
can learn, who have the strategies and confidence to reach all learners,
and who work collaboratively with colleagues, school leaders, and
parents to best serve the community. Our goal is to produce teachers
who become educational leaders early in their careers.
Ferrum College prepares students for licensure as teachers at the
elementary level (K-6), secondary level (6-12), and Physical Education
or Art at all-levels (PK-12). We encourage our graduates to be innovators
in the classroom who design their own materials using many resources
to meet the needs of learners.

Brief Message from the Director:
A handbook for Teacher Education at Ferrum College is available
upon request. This handbook explains the program in detail and identifies
the progression of steps for being recommended for a license to
teach in Virginia. If you have any questions after reading the handbook
please contact Nancy Beach or any other member of the education
department. We look forward to speaking with you.
