The major involves a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum that provides a highly specialized education for the student to become a professional in the industry of sports. Students who complete the program may find careers in professional and collegiate sports, retail sporting goods, sports information, resorts, management, administration, marketing, fitness and wellness facilities. The curriculum provides a solid foundation for those who intend to go to graduate school. The major involves a core of common courses completed by all sport management majors and three areas of concentration which provide opportunities for students to focus on a particular career interest. Emphasis areas include: (a) Sports Information Management/ Journalism. Selected by the student who would like to seek careers as sport journalists, sport information directors, athletic conference officers, or working in sport public relations. This concentration has a strong journalism component. (b) Sport Marketing. Selected by the student who would like to seek careers such as marketing directors for intercollegiate athletic programs, professional sports, sales representatives for sporting goods companies, conference offices and public relations. This concentration has a strong business component. (c) Sport Management. Selected by the student who seeks positions such as school/college athletic director, business manager, sport facility management, sport administrator, tournament/events directors. This concentration has a strong business component.
