The Social Work program at Ferrum College is accredited
by the Council on Social Work Education. Graduates of the program
receive the B.S.W. degree which prepares them for the beginning
professional practice of social work. Instruction in the program
emphasizes the theoretical foundations of beginning generalist social
work practice in both rural and urban communities.
The importance of cultural diversity is blended throughout an academic
presentation of values, ethics, and knowledge for practice of the
social work profession. Within the curriculum are incorporated both
classroom learning and supervised direct practice in the field.
It is required that the student complete two separate field experiences,
one in the sophomore year and one in the senior year.
A classroom seminar accompanies these experiences. The program utilizes
a broad spectrum of settings for field work. Field placements are
developed to fit the students' career objectives.

Brief Message from Coordinator:
Social Work classes are small, averaging about 15 students.
Faculty and students get to know one another quite well and students
are able to fully participate in the classroom as well as on the
campus and in the community. Community exposure and experience is
an excellent way to learn theory or reinforce what one has read
about or reviewed in class. Most social work classes will include
some type of project requiring students to get out into the real
world. Additional questions regarding the social work program can
be directed to the social work program faculty: Social Work Program
