Political science is the study of governments, how
they are organized, what they do, and how they deal with other governments.
Every citizen of a democracy should know something about his or
her government and other governments. Ferrum offers a 39 hour political
science major which prepares students for careers in the legal profession;
national, state, or local government; and other fields, such as
business, which entail working with governments. There is also
an 18 hour political science major which is an ideal supplement
to a major in criminal justice, environmental science, history,
and other areas.
Students majoring in political science may take an internship (PSC
499) for three to nine hours credit. In the past, students have
had internships in the offices of a United States senator, a member
of the House of Representatives, a governor of Virginia, several
lawyers' offices, with law enforcement, and other local government
agencies.
