- The mathematical sciences major is an excellent preparation for a wide range of careers.
Since the major provides the students with a broad quantitative background, they are
highly qualified to teach the diverse curriculum of secondary school mathematics
departments as well as meet the varied quantitative needs of business and industry. We
require our students to take at least 24 semester hours of mathematics, 11 hours of
computer science, 6 hours of statistics, and 8 hours of physics.
-
- Students majoring in mathematical sciences who minor in education are endorsed by the
Commonwealth of Virginia to teach mathematics at the secondary level. The faculty of the
Division of Mathematical and Computer Sciences are actively developing and implementing
innovative teaching methods which incorporate appropriate technology. This curriculum,
together with the exposure to varied teaching strategies provides our students with a
strong preparation for their future teaching careers.
