International Studies is a multidisciplinary major which offers students
the opportunity to become global citizens by learning the complexity
of international affairs through a variety of academic perspectives,
including economics, foreign language, history, and political science.
The study of history provides students with a rigorous preparation
and broad knowledge of world cultures, political science provides
them with the ability to analyze the consequences of international
events. The study of economics and foreign language (Ferrum offers
French, Russian, and Spanish) give them valuable quantitative and
communication skills that strengthen their career choices. International
Studies graduates of Ferrum College have embarked upon careers in
an equally wide variety of fields, including, law, government, banking
and insurance, education, commerical exporting, public service, missionary
work, and military service
Required Courses
After completing foundation courses in international relations and
comparative government, students take advanced courses from four distinct
areas: at least two courses in international economics, foreign language
up to at least the third year of college-level work, four courses
in area studies and three courses in international relations. Diverse
faculty and course offerings allow the international studies major
to pursue specialization in an academic discipline or geocultural
area to round out their program of study. Among the courses that may
