The art program at Ferrum stresses an integrated curriculum that includes the development of aesthetic awareness, technical skills, historical and contemporary art issues, and art production.  In addition to gaining a solid foundation in the fundamentals of art, you will be encouraged to express yourself creatively by participating in student shows and exhibits on and off campus.

Our goal is to prepare our students with marketable skills, critical judgement, sound knowledge of the visual arts, and self-confidence as creative artists.  The visual arts are rewarding and enriching experiences that can serve as a foundation on which to build a liberal arts education.  As an art student at Ferrum College, you will develop your artistic skills and historical knowledge of art in courses such as:

Drawing--Painting--2D Design--Computer Graphics--Photography--Sculpture--3D Design--Ceramics--Art History--Art Appreciation--Art Internship

Students who chose teaching as a career, with a major in art, will be fully endorsed by the Virginia Department of Education in grades K-12.  Experiential learning is encouraged, and an art internship in your area of interest, usually taken between the junior and senior years, is a valuable experience for art majors.

Juried student art exhibitions and campus publications offer students opportunities to show and publish their artwork.  Portfolio reviews are conducted for senior art majors to develop their presentation skills and demonstrate their progress in the program.  In the classroom, the studio critique is a valuable means of developing skills in critical and aesthetic judgement.
