Introduction

Ferrum's Teacher Preparation Program is exciting and demanding. Students are asked to master professional knowledge and then to evidence that they can apply that knowledge in the classroom. We believe that if individuals have the ability and the will to succeed, we can help them become effective teachers. In entering this program of teacher preparation, students are embarking upon an educational adventure. Over the course of the program, they will be asked and expected to answer four very important questions: Who am I? What do I need to know? What kind of teacher do I want to be? What do I believe about learners? The answers to these are important because teaching effectively in today's world is very difficult. As students look at these questions, they need to evaluate their interest in finding personal answers to them. If students wish to pursue a continual refinement of their answers, they will be guided in the process and will increasingly take charge of the educational opportunities offered in the program. If students are still undecided about entering the program, they should think about whether or not the following statements apply to them (If they do, they are probably excellent candidates for the program.): - I believe I am here to get the most out of my education. - I really want to be a teacher who makes a difference. - I am willing to do what it takes to get to my goal of being an effective teacher. On the other hand, if just "getting by" is good enough, if you do not feel that excellence is important, if you are not willing to seize each opportunity to grow personally and professionally, you probably do not want to do this. Think about it seriously. We need teachers with whole-hearted commitments to the profession, who understand learners, and who have the tools to be effective. Helping people learn is very rewarding. This program is designed to prepare students to teach effectively in today's world.
