Ferrum Mountain Water Shed
Faculty and students at Ferrum College are working with other colleges and universities ( CAWS; ROCA) to study, compare, and better understand ecological processes operating in small, upland watersheds across the Southern Appalachians. With funding provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the National Science Foundation in partnership with the University of Maryland's Appalachian Laboratory, faculty and students in the School of Natural Science & Mathematics at Ferrum College have instrumented a watershed to monitor and analyze streamflow, precipitation, soils, vegetation, and a wide range of other ecological parameters. Students studying Environmental Science, Biology, Horticulture, and Agriculture use the watershed in their courses, for independent research projects, and work with faculty on research projects during the summer.
