Dr. Schmachtenberg is Adjunct Professor of Geology and Paleontology. He has served Ferrum College since 1991.

His teaching areas include geology and paleontology. His current research interests include the paleontology and stratigraphy of Catawba Mountain near Roanoke, Virginia, and Piedmont geology of Franklin County.
