Courses

General Biology 101: Emphasis in this course will be on the fundamental principles of biology, cell structure and other functions,, cell energetics, genetics, evolution, and ecology.

General Biology 102: A survey of the diversity of living organisms and the biology of man.

Environmental Issues  ESC110: An interdisciplinary course to introduce students to the problems associated with man and his relationship to the environment.

Tropical Marine Ecology   ES205: An introduction to the geology, taxonomy, and ecology of tropical  islands.  Emphasis is placed on the study of marine organisms coral reefs and eel grass communities.   Taught on St. John's Island, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Fundamentals of Ecology   ESC211: An introductory study of the interrelationship of organisms with the abiotic and biotic components of their environment, with field and laboratory analysis of physical,     chemical, and biological factors of the community.  Includes a basic introduction to population dynamics.

Environmental Science Seminar   ESC307 &: Provides the opportunity fir in-depth study of current issues in ecology and environmental science through a seminar format.  Papers chosen from the scientific  literature are analyzed, criticized, and synthesized through formal presentation and practical experience in preparation for a successful career.

Fundamentals of Air & Water Pollution   ES421:  The logical starting point for individuals interested in pollution control.  The student will be introduced to the major perturbations causing air, soil, and       water pollution.  Prerequisites: ESC211 and Chemistry 103-104.

Professional Preparation   ES389:   All students preparing to do internships in the Life Sciences must  complete this course.  Students will demonstrate the ability to seek, secure, and prepare for a professional job.   Using individual and group conferences, instructors assist students in finding potential internships, completing resumes, cover letters, and interviews, and in developing skills in career planning.

Senior Seminar   ESC498:  The senior seminar is a thorough review of the student's work and study   activities.   It enables him to synthesize his theoretical and practical experience and to prepare for a successful career in his chosen field.

Internship    ESC499:  internships are normally spent off campus in work situations or voluntary service activities.   They are carefully supervised, and are designed to provide practical experience in   areas related to academic course work.  A minimum of 400 hours work experience.

Human Evolution and Ecology   SE133:   An introductory course in human evolution tracing man to his  present physical state and culture with emphasis on his influence on the environment.
