Dr. Powell received his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2001 and his M.A. in physics education from the University of Virginia in 2005. He received his B.S. degree magna cum laude in chemistry from Virginia Tech, with minors in mathematics and computer science, in 1996. He joined the Ferrum faculty in August 2001 as Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Physics and received tenure in May 2007 and was promoted to Associate Professor of Chemistry and Physics in May 2008. He is a member of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and is on sabbatical for the 2008-2009 academic year.
