Faculty members travel the globe representing Ferrum

Throughout 2004, faculty and students will be taking trips to various places around the world.

Some trips will take place during the spring 2004 academic semester, while others will take place over the summer. All of the trips planned have one common purpose, and that is to benefit the college, the teachers, or the students academically.

Dr. Lana Whited, Professor of English, will be taking a trip to Salzburg, Austria, Feb. 18-25. She will participate in a seminar entitled, "Ethics in News Reporting and Editing." The seminar will include discussions about news reporting and editing and how it is affected by social, political, technological and economic changes and pressures.

Whited said she hoped the experience will help her think about media ethics in a more global context. Her trip is funded by the Mellon Foundation.

Assistant Professor of Art Edward Gloria will be taking a trip to Italy May 13-24. The program is entitled "Fresco Pilgrimage and Literature in Renaissance Italy." Accompanying Gloria on the trip will be faculty and students from Virginia Intermont, Emory and Henry Milligan, and Ferrum. The students from Ferrum include Travis Dean and Joey Conger, both art majors. Throughout their trip, they will study the art of the Italian Renaissance and fresco painting, as well as Italian literature. They plan to visit historical sites, while maintaining a journal of writings and sketches.

Dr. David Howell, associate professor of religion and director of the Boone Honor Program, and Professor of English Dr. Marcia Horn will be taking a trip to Spain June 1-14. The trip is entitled, "The Heritage of Spain's Three Cultures: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam." Accompanying Howell and Horn will be faculty and students from five other ACA schools from the disciplines of religion, Spanish, and history. The two Ferrum students participating are Amy Cox and Amy Schlake, both religion majors who are studying Spanish as their foreign language. Along with the two students, Horn's husband, a freelance writer, will be accompanying the group. The purpose of the trip is to introduce the life, beliefs and Christian populations in Spain, as well as to sample their art and architecture.

Dr. Rathin Basu, professor of economics and division chair of the Division of Business, Computer Science, and Mathematics, will be taking a three-week trip to India sometime in the late July or early August; the dates are not yet finalized. The purpose of Basu's trip is to learn about the process of organizing and administrating a study abroad program. Basu will spend his time working with other faculty and students, while "shadowing" a study abroad administrator as the program runs. He hopes to make contacts for a possible study abroad program for Ferrum students and students from member college of the Appalachian College Association, of which Ferrum is a member.

Wes Astin, chaplain and instructor of religion and communication, and Todd Frederickson, assistant professor of forestry and wildlife, are also planning on taking trips this year. Astin will be taking a group to Belize, while Frederickson plans to travel to Bolivia.

With more than several trips up and coming in the future, Ferrum's faculty will possess even more knowledge about our surrounding cultures.
