What will your advisor do for you?

help you set long-range academic and career goals,

help you choose classes so that you can achieve your goals,

refer you to other campus resources, and

serve as a consultant when you need one.

When will you meet your advisor?
You will meet your freshman advisor during Panther PAWS.  At that time, he or she will help you choose courses for your first semester.  Your advisor will also be your instructor for the Ferrum Gateway Seminar. For new students, the advisor is usually the primary contact person at Ferrum.

Will you keep your advisor all four years?
No.  During your second semester, you will formally change from your freshman advisor to an advisor in your major, or to a pre-major advisor.  If change your major or decide on a major after that,  you might decide that another faculty member would be more helpful to you. If that professor agrees to be your advisor, you change advisors by filling out a form in the Academic Resources Center.

How often will you see your advisor?

During your first semester, you will meet regularly with your advisor as part of the Ferrum Gateway Seminar.  After that, it's up to you. As an upperclassman you will see your advisor at least twice a semester, once to discuss your midterm grades and the other time to pre-register for the following semester.  Generally, though, advisors will encourage you to visit with them and welcome you in their offices whenever you want or need to talk with them.
