Q: You mention the historic value and appearance of Roberts and Beckham Hall, is it official?

A: Yes! Roberts Hall and Beckham Hall are part of the Ferrum College Historic District and listed in the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places!

Q: Hey- I know it's the summer, but what's up with the cafeteria?

A: In anticipation of your early arrival, we ask that you please be aware that improvements to the Ferrum campus are still under way and some services are temporarily relocated. For example, dining services will not be held in the new renovated cafeteria until late August and will instead be provided at alternate locations around campus. Be mindful of the construction and renovation areas on campus and look for communication that will inform you of any change in service locations.

Q: What's with all the fences?

A: Sorry for the inconvenience, but it’s worth it! Construction fences are going up around campus and certain walkways and parking areas may be restricted. Please bear with the atmosphere of improvement and stay away from construction areas.

Q: What's the latest on the construction?

A: Well the last few t's have been crossed and i's dotted and we should be underway in one form or another by the first of February. You will first see some initial work to Beckham and then all three of the first major projects will be full steam by the end of February (internal Franklin Hall renovations, the new residence hall and Beckham).

Q: I thought you were building two dorms, why is only one mentioned in the timeline now?

A: Good question! Due to construction costs we are building one of the residence halls first and then plans are in place to build the sister building in Phase Two.

Q: Does Ferrum PLUS! = The USDA Loan?

A: Not really, but it is primarily funded by and includes the money we are using from the generous USDA loan. Ferrum PLUS! is the embodiment of a major set of renovation and construction projects paid for in part by the building loan from the USDA (one of the largest of its kind), a special gift from the late Bud Skeens and various Ferrum College-raised funds.

Q: When will these projects start? When will they be finished?

A: Current Estimations vary depending on the project. See this site for the most current projected timeline.

Q: Why do I, as a current student, have to pay for these new and renovated buildings when I won’t get to use them?

A: You won’t! We will not have to pay on the building loan until two years after construction begins.

Q: When has Ferrum College done this much construction at once?

A: Ferrum College hasn’t seen this level of facility activity in fifty years!

Q: What will all this construction mean for my activity/club/event/class?

A: Obviously there will need to be adjustments made in order to accommodate all the construction. Check with your advisor or instructor for recent location switches. Also check the latest news in scheduled facility displacement here.

Q: What does “Offline” mean?

A: Offline means that the entire space will be unavailable for College use. Activities scheduled will need temporary replacement spaces, including some faculty and staff offices and more (see this page for more info on scheduled location changes).

Q: As an Alumni, friend of the College or regional citizen, how can I watch construction while being off-campus?

A: Glad you asked! We have a page with photos of our projects, including behind-the-scene shots the public can’t see!
