Massey Energy President Continues Executive in Residence Program at Ferrum College

Massey Energy Company president, Baxter F. Phillips Jr., will come to the Ferrum College campus Friday, November 13th to continue the College’s Executive in Residence program. The Executive in Residence program is a new program designed to bring top business executives to campus. Phillips, who graduated from Ferrum Junior College, is the second of four distinguished and influential business leaders who will share their experiences, skills and “real-world” business expertise.
Phillips has been working with Massey Energy Company for the last 28 years and is a member of the company’s board of directors. During his time with Massey, Phillips served in all areas of the company including Corporate Treasurer, Manager of Export Sales, Human Resources and Benefits Officer, Vice President of Purchasing for Operations, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Administrative Officer.
Prior to his years of service at Massey Energy, Phillips' background was in banking and investments. He has served as a financial consultant to the Smithsonian Institution, the National Symphony, a foreign government, as well as, numerous municipalities and corporations. Both Baxter Phillips and his wife, Sharon Lee Phillips, are '66 alumni. They have a son and two grandchildren and presently reside in the Richmond metropolitan area.
Phillips will give a lecture focusing on the future of energy in the Blue Ridge Mountain Room in Franklin Hall on November 13th at 11:15 a.m. In addition to the lecture, Phillips will also visit with students during classes and dinners. Select groups of students, such as some members of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), as well as some Bonner Scholars are invited to attend these private receptions.
