Two Ferrum College Professors, along with twelve students and one alumnus took part in the Virginia Citizens for Water Quality Summit recently at the University of Virginia. Dr. Dave Johnson and Dr. Jason Powell brought the students to Charlottesville to meet with representatives from the Department of Environmental Quality and other experts to talk about the quality of Virginia’s waters.
Dr. Powell, along with students Austin French, Autumn Spencer and Tim Pohlad-Thomas presented the findings of their work on Smith Mountain Lake during the Summit. Ferrum students and faculty have been helping the State of Virginia monitor water quality on Smith Mountain Lake since 1987 and on Claytor Lake since 1996. Scientists from Ferrum College cooperatively administer the program with the Smith Mountain Lake Association and Friends of Claytor Lake. The mission of the program is to monitor water quality in Smith Mountain Lake and to encourage active participation of the lake communities in protecting the resource.
