On Thursday July 3rd, members of the Rocky Mount Rotary Club awarded Ferrum College President Jennifer Braaten a Paul Harris Fellow Award during the club’s annual Independence Day Festival. Braaten was honored for her role in the revitalization of the College. The Paul Harris Fellow recognition, the highest award presented in Rotary, was created in memory of Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary, as a way to show appreciation for contributions to the Foundation's charitable and educational programs. Braaten was presented with a pin, medallion and a certificate that identifies her as an advocate of the Foundation's goals of world peace and international understanding.
Mark Hudzik of Member One Federal Credit Union and member of the Rocky Mount Rotary Club, says, “When we take a look at what Dr. Braaten has accomplished in the short time she’s been at the college it is nothing short of remarkable. She has not only reshaped the Ferrum College campus, but has also been a major influence in the Franklin County community. When we see enrollment numbers up, and a real light of excitement in the eyes of students who attend Ferrum, residents take notice. Her work exemplifies not only the college’s motto of ‘Not Self, But Others,’ but also that of Rotary, which is ‘Service Above Self,’ and that is what this award is all about.”
Braaten, now in her sixth year as president of Ferrum, has led the College through several important milestones in its history, including the completion of FerrumPLUS!, a major new construction and renovation project, significant growth in the College’s endowment, and a continued surge in student enrollment. Ferrum expects to welcome another record number of freshmen this fall and is expanding its campus to accommodate the increase in students. Work on a new, three story residence hall is nearing completion on the west side of campus. The building will be ready for fall occupancy.
