Ferrum's 92nd Commencement Ceremony to Take Place May 3rd
On Saturday, May 3rd at 10:30 a.m. 150 prospective seniors will graduate from Ferrum College during outdoor commencement ceremonies led by Dr. Jennifer L. Braaten, Ferrum’s 10th president. A Baccalaureate service will be held in Vaughn Chapel the previous evening, Friday May 2nd, at 7:30 p.m.

Ferrum College Professor Serves as Consultant in Project to Improve the Management and Efficiency of China's Water Supply
Ferrum College Professor of Chemistry and Environmental Science, Dr. Dave Johnson, spent nine days in March working as a consultant on a study in China as part of a team developing a decision support system to reduce nonpoint source pollution to China’s Han River, the largest tributary to the Yangtze River. Of special interest is Danjiangkou Reservoir, a large reservoir that will be part of the South-to-North water diversion project that will eventually supply drinking water to over 10 million people in Beijing.

Ferrum College is pleased to announce the Wasena F. "Buddy" Wright Lecture Series is set for Monday, April 14th at 7:00 p.m. in Vaughn Chapel. This year’s lecturer is Sister Helen Prejean, an internationally known and leading advocate for the abolition of the death penalty. Former Apartheid Activist to Speak on Social and Economic Justice at Ferrum College
Former apartheid activist and expert in international human rights, Dr. Johan van der Vyver, will speak at Ferrum College on Thursday, March 27. The Boone Honors Program will sponsor the event at 7:30 p.m. in the Blue Ridge Mountain Room. The Model United Nations: Offering a Dose of Reality to Classroom Teaching and Knowledge

Concert at Ferrum College Will Commemorate and Celebrate
A concert commemorating both the suffering in the Holocaust and the earlier triumph over genocide represented by the Jewish holiday of Purim will take place on March 19 at 7 p.m. in Grousbeck Auditorium at Ferrum College. Clarinetist Eugene Jones will perform an excerpt from Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time.” Purim is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the deliverance of the Jews from a massacre by the wicked Persian minister Haman. Dr. Gary Evans will read from "Esther," which tells the story of Purim, while musician Jones accompanies on the clarinet. Dr. Evans will also have a slide show on Olivier Messiaen to begin the program. The concert is free and open to the public. A reception with refreshments will follow the concert. Ferrum College Campus Expansion Continues: Local Companies Help Build Residence Hall
Construction will begin in the near future on a new three-story residence hall to be located on the west side of the Ferrum College campus. The building will house 120 students, two to a room, and will help accommodate the continuing growth in enrollment that the college has been experiencing over the last several years. The use of these companies will give an economic boost to the economy in not only the Franklin County area, but surrounding regions as well. Ferrum College Launches New Classes through its Lifelong Learning Program
Ferrum College, in partnership with Condensed Curriculum International (CCI), is launching two new programs in the allied health fields through its Lifelong Learning Program. The programs, Pharmacy Technician Certification and Medical Billing and Coding, are designed to prepare students to take the certification exams in each respective area. Both programs are scheduled to accommodate the adult learner by meeting in the evening or on weekends. Medical Billing and Coding is a 70-hour program that will meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings beginning on March 10th. Pharmacy Technician is a 50-hour program that will meet on Saturdays beginning March 15th. Both programs will be held at The Franklin Center in Rocky Mount.

Ferrum College Looks For Its "Biggest Loser" in Campus-Wide Competition
Ferrum College is looking for its own "Biggest Loser" in a campus-wide competition to find the person who can lose the most amount of weight. Approximately 40 students, faculty and staff have signed up to compete in the 10-week contest. This race to shed the most pounds is different from the popular television show in that Ferrum participants must work out and diet completely on their own; no personal trainer is there to push them along the way.

In honor of Black History Month, Ferrum College will host a compelling and captivating performance by Melissa Waddy-Thibodeaux who plays Harriet Tubman in a one-woman show called "The Resurrection of General Harriet Tubman for Literacy." Distinguished Ferrum College History Professor to be Featured on an Upcoming Series on The Discovery Channel
Ferrum College Professor of History, Dr. Richard Smith, will be featured on an episode of a new series that will debut this summer on The Discovery Channel. The show will be hosted by award-winning television personality Josh Bernstein, widely known for his popular adventure-archaeology series called “Digging for the Truth” on the History Channel. The episode featuring Dr. Smith, entitled “Africa’s El Dorado,” will focus on the history of the Saharan desert city of Timbuktu, which was the center of the gold trade between the 14th and 16th Century. Bernstein called on Dr. Smith because of his expertise on Saharan history during this time frame.Read more »

A new art exhibit called "Collage, Assemblage and Mixed Media" is now on display at Ferrum College at the E. Taylor Greer Gallery of Ferrum’s Thomas Stanley Library. Co-Curators Nancy Hart and Suzie Kelly have put together the collage work of 8 very different artists for the exhibit. Artists from Italy to Ferrum to Portland, Oregon are featured in the show.

Billy Wagner to Receive Good Guy Award from New York Chapter of BBWAA
Five-time Major League Baseball All-Star Billy Wagner, a relief pitcher for the New York Mets, will be honored Sunday, January 27, in New York City with the Ben Epstein "Good Guy" Award. Wagner a former All-American at Ferrum College, will be presented with the award Sunday at the 85th annual dinner staged by the New York Chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America at the Hilton New York. Ferrum College Psychology Students Hold Book Fair to Promote Literacy January 25- 27
The Ferrum College Psychology Club is holding a book fair at Barnes & Noble at Tanglewood Mall from Friday January 25th through Sunday January 27th to promote literacy and raise money for Ferrum Elementary School and the Psychology Club. Special events are planned at the store on Saturday, January 26th from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday, January 27th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. These will include children’s crafts, coffee samplings, story times, and book signings to name a few.

Ferrum College Receives Financial Aid Grant from Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation
Ferrum College has received a grant in the amount of $25,500 from the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation to be used for financial aid. Students with financial need who have demonstrated a commitment to service above self and service to the community are eligible. Additionally, the Foundation has made a grant of $5,000 dollars to the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Endowment at Ferrum College. This endowment was established in 1998 to provide support in perpetuity for Sullivan Scholars at Ferrum College.
