Students package meals for Operation Sharehouse Over 600 freshmen will pack the Fitness Center on the Ferrum College campus on Friday evening, August 29, th to participate in Operation Sharehouse, a volunteer, on-site mission of Stop Hunger Now, a Raleigh, North Carolina-based international hunger relief agency that is committed to ending hunger by distributing food and other lifesaving aid to children and families in countries all over the world.

From 6:30-9:30 p.m. that evening the freshmen plan to put together nearly 80,000 meals in packets consisting of rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix that includes 21 essential vitamins and minerals. The meal packets are easy to store and transport and have a shelf life of up to 5 years.

This is the second year Ferrum College has participated in this project. Last year, about 100 student leaders packaged over 30,000 meals in 2 hours. Because of the success of that effort, they wanted to help out again this year and involve even more students. Those same student leaders will be running the event on Friday. They are extremely excited about helping to bring food and hope to the hungry and making a difference in countless lives.

This project is part of Ferrum College’s Gateway Program and 2008-2009 Academic Year theme, Legacies of the Past, Challenges for the Present: Gender Roles in a Shrinking World. The "Stop Hunger Now" project is just one of many that will be scheduled throughout the academic year and reflects Ferrum College’s motto; "Not Self, But Others."
