A Message From The President

Dear Ferrum Friends,

The last week of August marked an exceptionally busy and rewarding opening of school as we welcomed our largest number of new and returning students in many years. The FerrumPLUS! renovations to Beckham Hall and Franklin Hall are nearing completion, and great progress is being made on the addition of the conference center space to Franklin Hall. The new residence hall infrastructure is complete and the actual building is now taking shape.

We are extremely excited about our new academic initiatives, including the Pathways to Success program, and want to give a warm reception to our new faculty and staff members as well!

We also welcome nine new members to our Board of Trustees, several of whom are Ferrum alums. You can learn more about them in the upcoming fall issue of FM Magazine. They are a diverse and talented group of individuals, and we know that through their leadership and vision and that of the entire membership of the Board, Ferrum College will continue to excel.

In the midst of the wonderful things happening here on campus, we have been profoundly affected by the devastation wreaked on the Gulf Coast by Hurricane Katrina. We pause to reflect, remember and pray for all of the victims. Ferrum’s Dean of the Chapel, Rev. Wes Astin, has organized a campus-wide fundraising effort in conjunction with UMCOR (United Methodist Council on Relief) and the contributions to date have been generous. The College has also joined with our fellow institutions in the CICV (Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia) to offer a place for any college or university student displaced by the Hurricane. We do have a small number of alumni, friends and parents of students in the afflicted areas and the Institutional Advancement office is trying to connect with those individuals.

It is always fitting to give thanks for our blessings, to reach out a hand to our neighbors, and to celebrate the new beginnings at Ferrum College. We look forward to continuing the momentum of this wonderful start of the year throughout the semester, in particular with the upcoming homecoming activities and alumni gatherings and the 40th anniversary celebration of the 1965 championship football season. I hope you enjoy reading about all of the other Ferrum news and events in this issue of Fe.

Sincerely yours,

Jennifer L. Braaten
President
