Dear Ferrum Friends, It’s that time of year again – time for Football, Folklife Festival, Ferrum Fund Phonathon, and fall homecoming festivities . Is it any wonder that this is the favorite season for so many? As with every issue of Fe, we continue to celebrate the achievements of our alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends. This issue is no exception. A highlight is the story about our own Tiffany Weaver, a junior majoring in biology, who was the only college student in the state given the honor of representing over 20,000 of her fellow Virginia TAG recipients at a recent meeting with Governor Tim Kaine in Richmond. I also want to share with you some exceptionally good
news about our “Raising the Bar” fundraising campaign! Under the
leadership of Joe and Jane Stogner, co-chairs of the just-completed faculty-staff
portion of the campaign, we achieved 100% participation! Joe and
Jane and their group of dedicated volunteers deserve
accolades for this tremendous effort, as do our fantastic Ferrum employees
who showed through their unselfish giving that this truly is an extraordinary
place! Sincerely yours,

Stories The New York Times has called the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival
“thoroughly authentic.” Nearly 50 artisans will demonstrate traditional
hand skills from tatting to blacksmithing and will also sell their wares. Other
exhibits include the 19th annual Mountain Comforts Quilt Show (over 100
quilts were entered for judging in last year’s contest). Horse
pulls, coon dog contests, sheep herding, oxen driving and the Virginia
State Championship Mule Jumping Contest are just a few of the varied
and colorful events that will be going on throughout the day. “This is
the premiere showcase of old-time traditions that are still a part of
Virginia’s rural lifestyle,” said Roddy Moore, Director of Ferrum College’s
Blue Ridge Institute & Museum, the official State Center for Blue Ridge Folklore. Read

College Joins New Web-based Project to Provide Information to Students
& Parents Despite the many and varied sources of college information, focus groups
with higher education consumers show great concern about the lack of
proper information to make the right college choice. It was consumer
and political demand that sparked the development of U-CAN, which is
unique in the fact that it is the first nationally coordinated effort
by institutions themselves to collect and report data directly to students
and their families. Recently, the project gained attention when dozens
of colleges and universities publicly announced their decisions not to
participate in U.S. News & World Report’s annual ranking of America’s
Best Colleges. Read

College Holds Communications Board Forum These questions and more were raised during the Communications Board
Forum held October 1st in the Panther’s Den. Panelists included
Franklin County Commonwealth Attorney Cliff Hapgood,
Associate Professor of Criminal Justice Ken McCreedy, and
WSLS Channel 10 reporter Scott
Leamon. The
theme for the discussion centered around the impact of the media on the
justice system. Each panelist commented on their areas of expertise,
and the forum was then opened up to questions from the audience. Recent
high profile news stories were also discussed, including the Jena 6 controversy,
the arrests of Michael Vick and O.J. Simpson, the Virginia Tech tragedy
and the Iraq War. A podcast of the forum is available at http://ferrumradio.blogspot.com Ferrum
College Student Meets with Governor Tim Kaine in Richmond
Weaver, a junior majoring in biology, met with Governor Kaine during a Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia (CICV) meeting in Richmond on Friday, October 12th. During the meeting, several CICV presidents, including Ferrum’s president Dr. Jennifer Braaten, met with the Governor to discuss the state’s Tuition Assistance Grant (TAG) program and the group’s commitment to access and affordability to a college education for Virginia students. Weaver was introduced to the Governor and spoke about how TAG helped turn her dream of attending college into a reality. “I really felt honored and privileged to be given the opportunity to tell my story,” says Weaver. “If it wasn’t for the TAG program, I would not have been able to afford a college education.” Weaver is a first generation college student in her family. She says her parents would have struggled to come up with the money to send her to college. After graduating from Franklin County High School Weaver looked at several colleges in Virginia but says she found a home here at Ferrum College. “The minute I stepped on campus I knew I wanted to go to school at Ferrum. The campus was beautiful, the people were genuine, and there was always a friendly face.” More importantly, she says, was the attention she received from the financial aid office. “They sat down with me and went over all my options,” she says. “Once they estimated the cost, I was amazed. I realized for the first time that I actually could afford a college education.” CICV was instrumental in starting the state’s TAG program. TAG provides annual grants to Virginia residents who are full-time students at eligible private colleges and universities in Virginia. Weaver is a Bonner scholar, co-captain of the cheerleading squad and
volunteers with countless community service projects. She plans on attending
medical school after graduation and hopes one day to become a forensic
coroner. Moore Hall Returning students are happily settling into Moore Hall, the new state-of-the-art apartment-style residence hall and “twin” to Arthur Hall. Moore Hall, which officially opened its doors this fall, is named in memory of R. Stuart Moore, a former trustee and one of Ferrum’s most generous benefactors. Moore, who felt a need to help students who did not have the financial means for a college education, left a gift of $7.75 million to Ferrum College when he died in 1992. The gift was the largest in the college’s history and helped set up two independent trusts that fund both endowments for scholarships and operating costs. Moore also left the school his extensive art collection, 117 paintings that he collected over his lifetime. Those paintings can be seen in both the President’s home and John Wesley Hall. Events & Updates Included in the ceremony was the presentation of Brett Thomas' NCAA Division III statistical champion plaque as the nation's leader in home runs. Thomas batted .387 last season with 10 doubles, three triples, 15 home runs, and 65 RBI. He earned All-America second team honors last year, the 21st baseball All-American at Ferrum. Thomas is only the second player from Ferrum to win the NCAA home run statistical championship, joining former All-American Pat Daly, who earned the honor in 1998 with 24 home runs. The Panthers baseball team closed out the regular season in 2007 as co-champions then ran the table at the 2007 USA South Tournament and claimed the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Ferrum hosted an NCAA Regional for the first time on campus and drew the largest field possible, a seven-team event. Ferrum was eventually eliminated in the championship game, falling 6-5 in 12 innings to eventual NCAA runner-up Emory University. The Panthers' final record was 27-18. Coach Abe Naff retired from coaching last spring following the playoffs, but remains as Director of Athletics at Ferrum. Naff closed out his career with a 643-236-3 career coaching record, for an impressive 73 percent winning record. Naff averaged over 28 wins a year over a 23-year career as the Panthers’ skipper. Naff's honors include 10 trips to the NCAA playoffs, 10 conference championships, seven regional runner-up finishes, five Virginia Small College Coach of the Year awards and four USA South Coach of the Year awards. He is a member of the Salem-Roanoke Baseball Hall of Fame and the Lynchburg College Sports Hall of Fame.
Ferrum student athletes are enjoying many of the recent campus renovations,
including a new practice facility, which was developed from January to
July 2007 and has been used extensively by the Panthers. A new
press box has been installed and will be in place in time for the 2008
season. New lights have been installed at both the practice field and
the softball field. Radio Station Moving!
