A Message From The President

Dear Ferrum Friends,

The October issue of Fe is one of my favorites because we highlight the beauty of Ferrum in the fall. As so many of you have said, there is no better place to be than the Blue Ridge Mountains during these clear, crisp, autumn days.

We have held numerous events for alumni, students, families and friends since the beginning of the semester, and are happy to share pictures of these, from the football reunion to Family Weekend to Homecoming to Open House, and many, many more. We were also privileged in late September to host the presidents of the 25 member colleges of the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia (CICV) for their annual two-day meeting. For most of these presidents, it was their first visit to Ferrum and was an opportunity for us to showcase our fabulous campus and all its amenities. Upcoming events from now through November include our famous Blue Ridge Folklife Festival, an Environmental Symposium during which we’ll celebrate the 30th anniversary of our Environmental Sciences Program, various concerts and student events and many occasions to re-connect with alumni and friends.

Returning visitors are awed by the changes on campus that have occurred over the last two years, from the stunning Earl G. “Bud” Skeens Alumni Conference Center addition to Franklin Hall to the classic bronze statue of a nearly life size panther (donated by various classes), every corner of the campus is more beautiful, exciting and student-friendly than it has ever been. During the Fall Board of Trustees meeting, we will be “officially” dedicating the Conference Center as well as honoring the extraordinary artists who contributed original works to the “Women Artists of Distinction Collection” in the Blue Ridge Mountain Room. We will also recognize Professor Ken McCreedy’s photos depicting the “Four Seasons of Ferrum College,” now on display in Alumni Hall outside the Virginia Room.

As with each and every issue of Fe, we continue to celebrate all of the achievements of so many alums, students, faculty, staff and friends. We thank you for caring and for your connection and commitment to our amazing Ferrum College.

Sincerely yours,

Jennifer L. Braaten
President
