Greetings from the
Alumni Office!
Greetings
from the Alumni Office! Summer is almost here! Please
see our alumni calendar for our summer gatherings in your
area. If you know of a place we are missing, let us know!
In June, you will receive a special extended issue of
Ferrum Magazine. For a sneak preview of what’s inside,
see what our students had to say about Wes Astin and the
great things going on in Christian Ministries.

Laura
Boone
The trip to Guatemala just wouldn’t have been
as fun if Wes didn’t go, and I don’t think
I would’ve been as interested. He’s a great
person to be around and he made the not-so-great moments
enjoyable. I’m glad I finally got to go on one of
his famous Spring Break trips! I just regret waiting to
get to know him, as well as I do now, until my senior
year.

Felicia
Dean
Wes Astin was there for any problem that you had,
he will be up front with you and doesn’t tell you
what you want to hear, but tells you the truth and helps
you solve any problems. I feel when people are honest
that’s what counts the most.
We now have over 700 alumni signed up for our myspace
page. Thank you! We will add photos from our spring events
in the coming weeks.
Plans for Homecoming 2007 will be online soon! Save the
date now for the weekend of October 12-14. The festivities
will kick off with the annual Corron Classic Panther Open
Golf Tournament followed by the induction of the Class
of 1957 into the 50 Year Club and a campus picnic for
the entire Ferrum family. More details to follow!
Our congratulations to the newest members of our alumni
family, the Class of 2007!
We love to hear from you! Call us at 1-877-FERRUM1 or
contact us via email at alumni@ferrum.edu.
Keep sending those class notes! As always, please let
us know if you need us!

Commencement
'07
On Saturday, May 5th at 10:30 a.m., 152 seniors were handed their
diplomas and became Ferrum College graduates. Dr. Jennifer L.
Braaten, Ferrum’s 10th president, led the commencement ceremony,
which was held inside the Swartz Gymnasium. Baccalaureate was
held in Vaughn Chapel on Friday, May 4th, at 7:30 p.m.
Dr. Ken Yamada, former associate general secretary of the Division
of Higher Education, General Board of Higher Education and Ministry
(GBHEM) of the United Methodist Church, spoke to the graduating
class. Dr. Yamada concluded his distinguished 18-year tenure as
associate general secretary in the fall of 2005, and now serves
the GBHEM as Special Assistant to the General Secretary for Global
Education and New Initiatives.
Student awards were announced, including the Senior Academic Excellence
Award, which went to David (Drew) Eary of Salem, VA. Additional
recognitions went to those students who earned a 4. 0 in all Ferrum
College coursework. Those students are: Wilson Thomas Paine, Timothy
Earl Trent, Bobby Daren Williams, and Rhonda Seamster Wilmouth.
The James T. Catlin, Jr., Citizenship Award was given to Amy Baxter
of Virginia Beach, VA and Marcus A. Freeman of Jupiter, FL. The
Arthur S. Owens Leadership Award was given to Wilson T. Paine
of Maryville, TN.
The Exemplary Faculty Award and the Cheatham Fellowship was given
to Dr. George W. Loveland of Rocky Mount, VA. The Beckham Medallion,
Ferrum’s highest alumni honor, was also presented to Dr.
James (Jim) A. Davis ’65 of Winchester, VA.
Special recognition was awarded to Margaret Clark of Stuart, VA
who has served the College for almost 44 years. She holds the
distinction of being the longest serving staff member in the history
of Ferrum College.

Dr.
James A. Davis '65 - Recipient of Beckham Medallion
Dr. Davis has exemplified Ferrum College’s “Not
Self, But Others” motto with his tireless service to education,
community, church, and family. We are proud to bestow him with
Ferrum College’s highest honor.
Ferrum
College Announces “Raising the Bar;” Largest Fundraising
Effort in College’s History
At
a black-tie gala in the Skeens Alumni Conference Center in Franklin
Hall, Ferrum College publicly launched a new capital campaign
called “Raising the Bar: the New Campaign for Ferrum College,”
the largest and most ambitious fundraising effort in the College’s
94-year history. Guests of the event included Trustee and chairman
of the Campaign, Mr. Ron Willard, area dignitaries and major donors
to the Campaign. To date over 90% of the goal has already been
raised during the “quiet phase” of the Campaign. The
College expects to reach the $17 million dollar mark about a year
ahead of schedule. The money will fund numerous projects, including
endowments for teaching and scholarships, a state of the art athletic
center, a service-learning center, and renovations and upgrades
to several campus facilities. Dr. Jennifer Braaten says, “The
tremendous response to the quiet phase of the Campaign is also
solid evidence that projects such as our two new residence halls,
the dramatic renovation of Franklin Hall, including the beautiful
Skeens Alumni Conference Center, and the opening of the Ferrum
Community Health Clinic have inspired a high level of confidence
in our benefactors. We can never thank them enough, not only for
being so generous, but also for the trust they have placed in
us as administrators to steward their gifts to the highest and
best purpose.” During the gala, Ferrum senior, Wilson Paine,
and Jon Morris, alumnus and executive director of Step Inc. spoke
about what an impact Ferrum College has had on their lives.
Anthony
Giesen Gallery of American Brilliant Cut Glass
Ferrum
College received an extraordinary gift from Professor of Mathematics
Anthony “Tony” Giesen that is now open for the public
to view. Giesen, Ferrum College’s longest serving faculty
member, generously donated his collection of American Brilliant
cut glass to the college. This impressive collection is now on
exhibit in the Skeens Alumni Conference Center. Faculty and Staff
were treated to a special preview of the Anthony Giesen Gallery
of American Brilliant Cut Glass on Wednesday, May 2nd. The
rare and priceless pieces are illuminated and displayed in specially
handcrafted glass cases. His collection, amassed over a 50-year
period, includes a number of select rarities and represents examples
of the world-renowned artistry of the “American Brilliant”
period, circa 1876-1916. Giesen says he wanted people the opportunity
to see this elegant and unparalleled art form first hand. Among
higher education institutions, only Texas A&M has a similar
collection on display; however, this is the only one of its kind
in the state of Virginia. Giesen hopes students, faculty, staff
and community members come to the Gallery, but other collectors
as well, to see what they have never been able to find.
Roberts
Hall Re-Dedicated
On
Friday, May 4th, Roberts Hall was rededicated to celebrate the
completion of the renovation project. Many of the supporters of
the project, members of the Ferrum College Board of Trustees and
Alumni Board of Directors were able to tour the residence hall
to see the dramatic changes to the building. The timeless brick
and white-columned exterior of the building has been preserved
to maintain its historic integrity, however, the inside was completely
refurbished. Now, newly remodeled residence rooms and social areas
occupy the main and upper floors; faculty offices and a Student
Service Learning Center comprise the lower level. The Daniel-Bell
Service Learning Center, as it is now known, has been named after
two primary benefactors of the project, the late Agnes Cox Bell
‘27 and Ethelyne Daniel ’43. Both women lived and
worked in Roberts Hall when they attended Ferrum College. Their
generous gifts helped ensure that the residence hall was refurbished
to its original glory. Mrs. Daniel and Mrs. Bell’s sister,
Mrs. Winifred Roberson, attended the ceremony. The Daniel-Bell
Service Learning Center will be a place where students will have
access to a wide variety of service learning resources, including
connections with entities seeking volunteer services, reinforcing
Ferrum College’s “Not Self, But Others” motto.
4th
Annual Relay for Life
On
March 30th and 31st, Ferrum College joined in the fight against
cancer by hosting its Fourth Annual Relay for Life program.
The event raised a whopping $17,315.48 just under their $18,000
dollar goal. Way to go!
Students, Faculty, Staff and community members gathered at the
Panther Baseball Stadium to rally for this cause. Several activities,
games and fun entertainment kept everyone going through the morning
hours.
Kicking off the Relay for Life was Diem Brown, one of
the stars from MTV’s Reality TV show, Real World/Road
Rules Challenge. She talked about her battle with cancer
and her roles on Reality TV while dealing with the disease.
The night’s theme was “Cartoons for a Cure”
and each team had a different cartoon character as a mascot for
the night. Participants of the event listened to the sounds of
area bands, including Kerosene Willy; D.J. Jeff Crouse,
and special appearances by Ferrum College’s own, the infamous
Bald Brothers.
The highlight of the event was the luminary lap, where the field
was lit with luminaries purchased in memory of loved ones who
have suffered, survived, or died from cancer.
College’s Against Cancer, Student Leadership and
Engagement, and other clubs and organizations on campus and
in the Ferrum community sponsored the event.
New
Softball Field is Dedicated
Ferrum
opened its new softball facility Mar. 12 with a pair of wins over
Wilson College. Plenty of fans were on hand to see Ferrum open
with an 11-2 win in the first, followed by a 6-0 win in the nightcap.
Senior Katie Custis sent a ball deep over the left field wall
for the facility’s first-ever home run. Senior Laura Terry
pitched a complete 5-inning game in the first game with six strikeouts,
while senior Kim Cox pitched a complete 7-inning game with seven
strikeouts. The facility looks fabulous and still has some work
to be done, including a new scoreboard and new dugouts. Coach
Vickie Van Kleeck and the softball team would like to thank the
Ferrum College administration for their work in getting the facility
ready to play this season.
White
Liquor, Blue Ridge Style to Stay Open at Blue Ridge Institute
Due to
popular demand, White Liquor, Blue Ridge Style,
an exhibition at Ferrum College’s Blue Ridge Institute
and Museum, will stay open through February of 2008.
The exhibit showcases the real nature of illegal distilling
in the southern Virginia mountains, a folk tradition that
went far beyond the mountains thanks to industrialization,
traditional know-how, hard work, and lots of illegal activities.
“This is the most comprehensive exhibit that’s
ever been done on moonshine in the country.” Said Roddy
Moore, Director of the Blue Ridge Institute & Museum.
“We’ve never had anything this popular at our
museum … so we decided to keep it open for an additional
11 months.” National Geographic Magazine’s film
crew has already documented the exhibit and used parts of
it in their current documentary on moonshine.
White Liquor, Blue Ridge Style explores
over a century of moonshining traditions in the Blue Ridge
Mountains. Distilling know-how came into the region with the
first English, Scots-Irish, and German settlers. Locally made
alcohol was a common part of the foodways of the Blue Ridge.
Apples were crushed, and the juice was distilled into brandy
or fermented into hard cider. Grains were distilled into hard
liquor or brewed into a “beer” or malt drink.
White Liquor, Blue Ridge Style tells
its story through displays of actual stills, dozens of photographs,
still makers’ tools, video interviews with retired moonshiners
and federal agents, and a host of other documents and memorabilia
Located on the campus of Ferrum College, the Blue Ridge Institute
& Museum is open Mondays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to
4:30 p.m., year-round; and Sundays, 1 to 4:30 p.m., mid-May
through mid-August. For more information call 540-365-4416
or visit www.blueridgeinstiute.org.
Ferrum
Hosts Tennis Fundraiser for Student
On
a beautiful Saturday in April, The Student Engagement and
Leadership Office at Ferrum College hosted a fundraiser in
support of Kevin Board. Board, a junior sports management
major and captain of the men’s tennis team, is in need
of a kidney transplant and will undergo surgery this summer.
To raise money, and awareness, The College held an all-day
tennis event on April 21st. The day’s activities included
not only an attempt to log 100 sets of tennis, but also a
silent auction, and free children’s clinic. Local and
national companies donated items for the silent auction. A
representative from the National Kidney Foundation’s
Southwest Virinia was also on hand to answer questions, and
to educate people about kidney disease.
So far, it’s estimated that about $5,000 dollars has
been raised from the event. All proceeds go to Kevin Board
and his family, in an effort to offset expenses for the kidney
transplant. Board is the son of Barbara and Tony Mills of
Rocky Mount, and Ken Board of Glade Hill.
Ferrum
Offers Thoughts and Prayers to Virginia Tech
On
Friday, April 20 Ferrum College joined colleges and universities
across the nation and around the world for “Hokie Hope”
an effort to show our support for the students, faculty and
staff after the horrific events Monday, April 16th. Many on
the Ferrum Campus could be seen wearing their orange and maroon
– a movement to come together to express our deepest
condolences to the loved ones of those killed or injured that
fateful day. Many in the Ferrum community have friends or
loved ones who are students, alumni, or employees at Virginia
Tech. "Orange and Maroon Effect" day was traditionally
held for athletic events, however, Tech alumni invited people
across the country to be a part of their family, stating,
“Today, we are all Hokies.”
Ferrum
College Sets New Standards in Campus Safety
Ferrum
College joins leading institutions that are using new technology
in alerting students in the event of an emergency. Whether
it’s a weather-related event, or a potentially dangerous
situation on campus, Ferrum College has a new state-of-the-art
emergency communication system in place, to notify students
instantly. University of Virginia, Penn State, and Syracuse
University are just a few of the many institutions that have
signed on to this alert system.
The service, called e2campus is a mass notification system
that can alert students with text messages on their cell phones.
With 90% of college students having mobile phones, this method
of communication can increase campus safety on the Ferrum
College campus. Time-sensitive messages can now go out to
parents, students, faculty, and staff; wherever they are,
via cell phones, pagers, wireless PDAs, and e-mail in addition
to our current alert systems. The service is a cross-carrier
mobile content service, so it doesn’t matter which phone
provider users currently have, as long as that provider has
service on the Ferrum College campus. We welcome you to sign
up today. Simply visit our site at www.ferrum.edu/e2campus.
For more information on this service, visit the e2Campus website

Alumnus Returns for Book Signing and Reading

Ferrum
College graduate and former motivational speaker Donnie Brown,
returned to campus April 18th for a book signing and reading of
his very first book, Jessie is Her Name: A Virginia Family’s
Oral History 1912-1949.
Brown, a native of Staunton, Virginia graduated from Ferrum College
in 1966. He was the 2005 recipient of the Beckham Medallion, Ferrum
College’s highest alumni honor. Brown signed several books
in the bookstore and shared stories and laughs will many who came
to see him. He says he wanted to come to Ferrum to tell his story
because he says, “Ferrum gave me so much, and I want to
give back in some way.”
Brown began a family history search in 1979, when his mother got
sick. It led to his writing of Jessie is Her Name. “I
figured if I could tell her story, then she really never died.
She taught me so much about life, and I want to share that.”
Brown said.
The book is the history of three generations of an Irish Shenandoah
Valley of Virginia family. It tracks the life of Jessie Brown,
Donnie’s mother, from her early childhood on an Estaline
Valley farm to her becoming the beloved foster child of a wealthy
Staunton, Virginia couple.
The book is told from Donnie’s viewpoint after hearing many
of her stories growing up. Although written as a work of fiction,
it incorporates many real events in the Brown family history.
