March, 2007

Dear Friends,

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! From shamrocks, to the first daffodil shoots, to the grassy lawns that are beginning to flourish as temperatures moderate, green is the color of spring! The Ferrum campus is bursting with news of events, awards, spring break trips, performances and upcoming alumni activities. The new faces on campus include Natalie Faunce, Director of Public Relations, Jill Watson, Director of Grants and Special Projects, and Justin Muse, Assistant Director of Student Activities. You’ll find out how bluebirds get the jump on spring in the pages of Assistant Professor of Forestry and Wildlife Todd Fredericksen’s Ferrum Nature Society Newsletter. Todd’s students are helping these feathered friends of ours by building birdhouses, and Todd has just been promoted to Editor-in-Chief of the journal Forest Ecology and Management.

The Virginia Festival of the Book takes place this month in Charlottesville, and at Ferrum, we have our own “mini” book festival as we celebrate our faculty who have recently written or edited books on a wide variety of topics. English professor Pete Crow’s Do, Die or Get Along, a Tale of Two Appalachian Towns, library science associate professor George Loveland’s award winning Under the Workers Caps, and history professor Richard Smith’s Ahmad Al-Mansur are all available at Amazon.com. English associate professor Tina Hanlon is an editor of the newly released Crosscurrents of Children’s Literature. Congratulations to these amazing members of our Ferrum family whose extraordinary accomplishments continue to bring honor and prestige to the College. In more on the book front, the special guest and featured speaker at our tenth annual Women’s Leadership Conference this month will be Sharon Mehdi, nationally renowned author of The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering.

More wonderful recognition of our outstanding faculty came this week as Rex Stephenson, professor of drama, received the prestigious Sara Spencer Child Drama Award at the Southeastern Theater Conference meeting in Atlanta. Watch for news regarding the April opening of the 28th season of the acclaimed Blue Ridge Dinner Theatre. The Ferrum College Drama and Music departments, under the leadership of Wayne Bowman, professor of theatre, and Susan Spataro, instructor of music, will present the musical “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" this month.

Our students continue to excel academically, civically and athletically. Alpha Chi Honor Society inductees, under the guidance of Katherine Grimes, were feted at a special candlelight ceremony in February. The Student Government Association, under the leadership of SGA president Wilson Paine, will host a forum on Global Warming on March 19, and Andrea Zuschin, Dean of Student Affairs, reports about many other upcoming student activities. On the sports front, our student athletes continue to shine! The women softball players won their first two games on their spectacular new field that will be formally dedicated on March 26. Special thanks to Franklin Community Bank and other donors for making this first phase of the Hank Norton Center a reality.

And last but not least, when you have the opportunity for a break between classes or work, drop by The News Café addition to the Bookstore for a complimentary cup of Starbucks coffee! While you’re there, check out the great selection of Ferrum logo merchandise and sale items that the friendly staff has to offer. We love to see our students and alumni wearing their Ferrum gear!

Thanks again to all of you for your ongoing support that makes all this possible.

Sincerely yours,

Jennifer L. Braaten
President

Habitat for Bluebirds

Bluebirds are among the most colorful of our Virginia songbirds and they can be seen in many locations on the Ferrum College campus. In March, eastern bluebirds start searching for nesting locations. In their natural habitat, bluebirds seek out cavities in trees for their nests, but they will also readily use artificial nest boxes if they meet certain specifications, the most important of which include appropriate habitat conditions – fields with scattered trees and shrubs. It is also important to place boxes near the ground (4-6 feet) and, ideally, they should be placed on aluminum poles or have predator baffles. Boxes should be made of weather-resistant wood, such as cedar. Designs are available on the web from many organizations. For more about bluebirds, see this month’s Ferrum Nature Society Bulletin

Students in Natural Resources Conservation (SCI 126) have been busy making bird boxes for bluebirds and chickadees. Brent Beckwith (pictured left) worked with Steven Slusher and Wallace Wright to build several boxes included two to be located near the President’s home. Carrie Lam constructed several boxes for Carolina chickadees which she donated to the Ferrum Elementary School for conservation projects.

Greetings from Andrea Zuschin, Dean of Student Affiars
It’s nearly springtime, which means our campus is about to bloom into colorful spring flowers and our seniors are blossoming into soon-to-be college graduates. We will have over 170 graduates this spring, all of whom are either headed into careers or on to graduate school. Our Career Services Office works closely with local, regional, and national employers to try to connect graduates with jobs and careers that are the right “fit” for them. In February, over 60 Ferrum students participated in a Career Premiere Fair at the Wyndham Hotel in Roanoke, Virginia, where 125 employers were recruiting. The Career Services Office is also holding a Professional Protocol Dinner for Seniors on Thursday, March 29. This event, sponsored and attended by local employers and free to seniors, is a great opportunity for the students to practice and perfect their professional social skills while enjoying a delicious meal.

In addition to helping students plan for their future, we work with them closely to enhance their college experience through a wide variety of student activities. The annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life will be on March 30 and 31. With participation from student organizations, faculty and staff, athletic teams, and local community organizations, last year’s Relay for Life teams raised over $16,000. The goal this year is $18,000 and we wish them the best of luck in their endeavor! Another major activity is Spring Fling, scheduled for Saturday, April 14. This popular event includes Karaoke, a DJ Party, and a Midnight Movie. And on April 21, our Spring Jam will be held on Wiley Drive featuring live bands and dinner.

Greetings from the Alumni Office!
We are looking forward to seeing you at one of our spring gatherings. Strawberry Hill at Colonial Downs is just around the corner! Order your tickets through the Alumni Office today!

Visit our alumni calendar for gatherings we have planned near you! We are hoping to plan events in the Hampton Roads area and North Carolina in the coming months. If you are in those areas and have suggestions for the types of events you would like to see, please let us know. We are looking for chapter committee volunteers now. Please call or email us if you might be interested in helping in this role.

Plans are underway for Homecoming 2007! The weekend will kick off with the annual Corron Classic Panther Open Golf Tournament to be held at Westlake Golf and Country Club on Friday, October 12th. That evening, we will honor the Class of 1957 and their induction into the 50 Year Club as part of our on campus celebrations. On Saturday, October 13th, we will honor our Distinguished Alumni Award recipients and our Sports Hall of Fame inductees. More details to follow in the coming months!

The next issue of FM will reach your mailboxes by early June! This issue will be packed with photos and features on the many wonderful happenings around campus. Our 2002 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient Mike Ferguson ’81 is back home at Ferrum College and will be featured as part of our alumni profile section. There will also be an update on all of the great work Rev. Wes Astin ’74 is doing with Christian Ministries.

Don’t forget to visit our new MySpace page! As always, please let us know if you need us! We hope to see you soon!
