Habitat
for Bluebirds Bluebirds
are among the most colorful of our Virginia songbirds and they
can be seen in many locations on the Ferrum College campus. In
March, eastern bluebirds start searching for nesting locations.
In their natural habitat, bluebirds seek out cavities in trees
for their nests, but they will also readily use artificial nest
boxes if they meet certain specifications, the most important
of which include appropriate habitat conditions – fields
with scattered trees and shrubs. It is also important to place
boxes near the ground (4-6 feet) and, ideally, they should be
placed on aluminum poles or have predator baffles. Boxes should
be made of weather-resistant wood, such as cedar. Designs are
available on the web from many organizations. For more about bluebirds,
see this month’s Ferrum
Nature Society Bulletin
Students in Natural Resources Conservation (SCI 126) have been
busy making bird boxes for bluebirds and chickadees. Brent Beckwith
(pictured left) worked with Steven Slusher and Wallace Wright
to build several boxes included two to be located near the President’s
home. Carrie Lam constructed several boxes for Carolina chickadees
which she donated to the Ferrum Elementary School for conservation
projects.
Greetings
from Andrea Zuschin, Dean of Student Affiars
It’s nearly springtime, which means our campus is about
to bloom into colorful spring flowers and our seniors are blossoming
into soon-to-be college graduates. We will have over 170 graduates
this spring, all of whom are either headed into careers or on
to graduate school. Our Career
Services Office works closely with local, regional, and national
employers to try to connect graduates with jobs and careers that
are the right “fit” for them. In February, over 60
Ferrum students participated in a Career Premiere Fair at the
Wyndham Hotel in Roanoke, Virginia, where 125 employers were recruiting.
The Career Services Office is also holding a Professional Protocol
Dinner for Seniors on Thursday, March 29. This event, sponsored
and attended by local employers and free to seniors, is a great
opportunity for the students to practice and perfect their professional
social skills while enjoying a delicious meal.
In addition to helping students plan for their future, we work
with them closely to enhance their college experience through
a wide variety of student activities. The annual American
Cancer Society Relay for Life will be on March 30 and 31.
With participation from student organizations, faculty and staff,
athletic teams, and local community organizations, last year’s
Relay for Life teams raised over $16,000. The goal this year is
$18,000 and we wish them the best of luck in their endeavor! Another
major activity is Spring
Fling, scheduled for Saturday, April 14. This popular event
includes Karaoke, a DJ Party, and a Midnight Movie. And on April
21, our Spring Jam will be held on Wiley Drive featuring live
bands and dinner.
Greetings
from the Alumni Office!
We are looking forward to seeing you at one of our spring gatherings.
Strawberry Hill at Colonial Downs is just around the corner! Order
your tickets through the Alumni Office today!
Visit our alumni calendar for gatherings we have planned near
you! We are hoping to plan events in the Hampton Roads area and
North Carolina in the coming months. If you are in those areas
and have suggestions for the types of events you would like to
see, please let us know. We are looking for chapter committee
volunteers now. Please call or email us if you might be interested
in helping in this role.
Plans are underway for Homecoming 2007! The weekend will kick
off with the annual Corron Classic Panther Open Golf Tournament
to be held at Westlake Golf and Country Club on Friday, October
12th. That evening, we will honor the Class of 1957 and their
induction into the 50 Year Club as part of our on campus celebrations.
On Saturday, October 13th, we will honor our Distinguished Alumni
Award recipients and our Sports Hall of Fame inductees. More details
to follow in the coming months!
The next issue of FM
will reach your mailboxes by early June! This issue will be packed
with photos and features on the many wonderful happenings around
campus. Our 2002 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient Mike Ferguson
’81 is back home at Ferrum College and will be featured
as part of our alumni profile section. There will also be an update
on all of the great work Rev. Wes Astin ’74 is doing with
Christian Ministries.
Don’t forget to visit our new MySpace
page! As always, please let us know if you need us! We hope
to see you soon!
