A Message From The President

Dear Ferrum Friends,

Happy FOURTH of July! This not only a day to enjoy FLAGS, FUN and FIREWORKS, but also a time to celebrate FREEDOM, FAITH, FRIENDS, FAMILIES and this FANTASTIC place we call FERRUM COLLEGE!

This summer edition of Fe is filled with news! From the numerous projects of the nearly completed FerrumPLUS! to the community health clinic, the first project under CommunityPLUS!, the campus continues to hum with the excitement of construction activity. A crew from National Geographic visited campus last week to film the new “white liquor” exhibit at the Blue Ridge Institute, and and if you need a break from the summer heat, take in the “cool” ceramics exhibit at the Greer Gallery. The Dinner Theatre season is in full swing with patrons thoroughly enjoying not only the fabulous entertainment but also their premier dining experience in the new Blue Ridge Mountain Room in the Earl G. “Bud” Skeens Alumni Conference Center. Just to highlight a few of the stories in this issue, Pete Crow facilitated another successful NEH Institute with the participation of many faculty and staff, employees were feted at a recent “appreciation luncheon,” we were privileged once again to host United Methodist Women for UMW Day, and our “summer campers” are here in force once again!

If it sounds like there is no such thing as a lazy summer day at Ferrum College, that is probably true, but I hope we can all stop for a moment to take in the beautiful sights and sounds that the warm weather brings and reflect on the myriad privileges we enjoy as Americans. Thank you all for your continuing love and support for Ferrum.

Sincerely yours,

Jennifer L. Braaten
President

BRI Opens White Liquor, Blue Ridge Style Exhibit
White lightnin’. Mountain dew. The words call up images of reclusive backwards mountain men tending stills in hollows dark with laurel. White Liquor, Blue Ridge Style, a new exhibition at Ferrum College’s Blue Ridge Institute (BRI) and Museum, showcases the real nature of illegal distilling in the southern Virginia mountains—a folk tradition that went far beyond the mountains thanks to industrialization, traditional know-how, hard work, and lots of illegal activities. White Liquor, Blue Ridge Style is now open at the State Center for Blue Ridge Folklore on the Ferrum campus. Admission is free.

National Geographic was in town on June 28th (pictured above) to interview BRI Director Roddy Moore and film the exhibit. White Liquor, Blue Ridge Style is already garnering national attention, and has regionally been the focus of much attention, including TV coverage before it was even open. Read more...

Radio IQ
Now in its third year, Radio IQ is a public radio service of Virginia Tech and Ferrum College offering BBC news and NPR talk programs to listeners in the New River Valley. In 2003, National Public Radio station WVTF in Roanoke and Ferrum College reached a deal to move Ferrum's radio station to internet broadcasting in exchange for support for the call sign WFFC. WVTF continues to assist the FerrumRadio.com with vital technical support and internship opportunities and the popular Radio IQ channel carries Ferrum's name to listeners across the state.
