Message from the Alumni Office
Greetings
from the Alumni Office! We hope you are enjoying a wonderful
2007 thus far! We have just launched a Ferrum Alumni MySpace
page which can be viewed at www.myspace.com/fcalumni.
Our page will keep you informed of both upcoming alumni
events and on campus happenings. As our chapter gatherings
begin this spring, we will include photos from the events
on both our myspace page and on our alumni page at http://www.ferrum.edu/alumni/alumnical.htm.
We have some exciting plans in store for you this year!
In the coming months, we will send you details on receiving
a lifetime Ferrum email address. Save the date now for
HOMECOMING 2007- OCTOBER 12-14. The annual
Corron Classic Panther Open golf tournament will kick
off the weekend at Westlake Golf and Country Club.
We are working to establish alumni chapter committees
by this summer. If you are interested in finding out more
about our alumni chapters, please let us know!
Our new toll free phone number is 1-877-FERRUM1. Keep
sending us your photos for the Class Notes section of
the Ferrum Magazine! We love to hear from you!
Sincerely,
Joanna Coleman
Director of Alumni and Family Services
A
Message from the Department of Institution Advancement
Dear Alumni and Friends:
Winter greetings from Ferrum, and I trust that the year
ahead will bring you great happiness, peace and good health.
As we move forward and continue to change and improve
this wonderful institution, I hope that you will continue
to show your Ferrum pride and loyalty by your own support
for the College. There are multiple ways you can support
Ferrum.
Our surge in enrollment this year underscores the fact
that our students see Ferrum as a great educational value
and a place of opportunity. You can help us grow our financial
aid and scholarship programs by supporting our Ferrum
Fund or by joining the Arthur Society. Make a gift on-line
using our secure server, or contact one of our staff members
in the development office.
Later in the spring, you will hear the grand public announcement
of our capital campaign appropriately named Raising the
Bar: The New Campaign for Ferrum College. Through the
campaign, you have opportunities to support new campus
construction, new endowments for teaching and learning,
the Blue Ridge Institute, or our signature component,
the new Hank Norton Athletic Center.
Finally, I encourage you to get involved with our alumni
chapters at one of the many gatherings we hold around
the country each year, or come out to a sports event as
the Panther teams travel to your area. This is a great
opportunity to connect with other members of the Ferrum
family, socialize and be connected to the happenings on
campus.
From the entire staff in Institutional Advancement, I
thank you for your on-going stewardship of Ferrum College.
Please remain involved, connected and supportive as we
work together to strengthen the College we all love deeply.
Sincerely,
Dr. Lee King
Vice President for Institutional Advancement

Campus
Renovations Continue
While
many of the high profile construction and renovation projects
like Beckham Hall, the Skeens Alumni Conference Center,
Arthur Hall and Roberts Hall have been completed, work
continues on many other projects to enhance and expand
the Ferrum campus. Most notable is the construction of
another new residence hall designed as the twin to Arthur
Hall. The project is well underway and expected to be
completed in time for the opening of school in the fall.
Tucked into the hillside behind Hillcrest apartments is
the Franklin Community Bank Field, the new home of the
Panther women’s softball team. This new addition
provides a professional quality home field for our softball
team which has been playing “home” games for
many years either in Rocky Mount or Roanoke. Multiple
gifts from alumni, friends and corporations have helped
to fund the field, the most notable being a significant
commitment from Franklin Community Bank.
The east the bookstore now features a new glass-walled
"coffee shop"addition. Excepted to open by mid-February,
this addition will offer another gathering space for students,
faculty and staff featuring coffee, comfortable seating
and access to Ferrum's wireless computer network.
Over the Christmas break, Britt Hall received some welcome
facelifts refurbishments, too. including fresh paint throughout.
The original wood floors, trim and doors were refinished
and repaired. Repairs were also completed on portions
of the exterior wood trim and moldings.
And last but not least, to help encourage a truly welcoming
atmosphere, the ARC facility has been given a “facelift,”
including artwork, new carpeting and a comfortable and
inviting coffee/sitting area.
Academic
Resources Center Makes Changes to Better Serve Students
Recent alumni of Ferrum may have spent many hours in the
Academic Resources Center (ARC) in Stanley Library receiving
help on everything from study skills to tutoring to composition.
To better serve our students, academic programs within
the ARC have evolved in multiple ways this year.
A new tutoring program implemented this year is known
as PAL, or Peer Assisted Learning. A PAL is a student
tutor who is assigned to classes which have been identified
by students and faculty as difficult classes in which
students may require extra help. The PAL attends the assigned
class and models successful learning skills, works with
the faculty member and holds at least two study sessions
each week with students. PALS not only review notes and
class material but also look at successful study strategies.
We have 27 classes participating this spring.
Another change has occurred in our services to students
who need additional help with writing. The Composition
Center has changed its name to the Writing Center and
will gradually expand its service to students who are
enrolled in writing intensive classes. The Writing Center
has also moved into dedicated space of its own next to
the ARC. This change brings not only makes additional
square feet available, but also will allow for the expansion
of computers available to support the Writing Center.
We are pleased have Dr. Marcia Horn and Dr. Tina Hanlon
working with Writing Center and have the addition of Dr.
Laurie McCollum-Tisdale who is working two additional
evenings each week. A Math Center makes its debut this
spring semester under the Direction of Dr. Dave Johnson
and Dr. Steve Mason.

New Staff to Join the Institutional Advancement
Division
Ferrum is pleased to welcome two new leaders to the Institutional
Advancement division. Natalie Faunce
will soon be joining Ferrum as our new Director of Public
Relations, while Jill Watson will also
be joining us as Director of Grants and Special Projects.
Natalie will join Ferrum in March after a career in television
as a news reporter and anchor. Local friends and alumni
will recognize her as the current anchor of the Fox 21/27
newscast from the Fox network affiliate in Roanoke. She
has previously worked for television stations in West
Virginia, Tennessee, and Nebraska. Natalie is a graduate
of East Stroudsburg University. Her media background will
be extremely beneficial to Ferrum as we seek to enhance
the College’s visibility, both regionally and nationally.
Jill Watson comes to Ferrum from the office of US Senator
George Allen and will join us in mid February. At Ferrum,
Jill will develop and implement the College’s programs
for raising funds from corporations and foundations. Additionally,

Justin
Muse '05 Returns to Campus
We
are pleased to announce that Justin Muse ’05
has returned to Ferrum to assume the role of Assistant
Director of Student Leadership and Engagement.
On returning home to his alma mater, Justin smiles and
shares, “I feel good about being back at Ferrum
and in the college atmosphere. I am looking forward to
interacting with the Ferrum family again. With our students,
I will be able to share my own experiences at Ferrum.
We will work toward goals to help us be successful together.”
Justin will indeed have a strong background to bring to
our student body. As a student he served as SGA Legislative
Vice President and as an active member of Bacchus and
Alpha Phi Omega. He was also an Admissions Ambassador,
Homecoming King, and was voted senior class commencement
speaker by his classmates.
Dave Newcombe, Director of Student Leadership and Engagement,
is excited about what Justin will bring to the role, “As
a student, Justin was a very involved student leader.
Through that experience he grew, learned, and developed
as a role model and leader. He was extremely well liked
by students, faculty and staff. I believe he will bring
his charisma and same likeability to this position.”
Please join us in welcoming Justin to his new role!

Ferrum
Eight Remembered Among Those Lost in Marshall Plane Crash
- Kelly Payne ’09
On
Wednesday, January 24th, a group of approximately 115
Ferrum College students attended a showing of the movie
We Are Marshall at the Eagle Cinema in Rocky
Mount. Thanks to those in the Student Leadership and Engagement
Office, as well as the Athletics Department, the showing
of this movie was free to all 115 students. Before the
movie began, the students were told of Ferrum’s
connection to the tragedy at Marshall. Horace
Green ’69 spoke fondly of the former Ferrum
College football team members who lost their lives in
the Marshall plane crash. As a student myself, I thought
it was very interesting to see how Ferrum was connected
to the tragedy and it gave a sense of pride of Ferrum’s
history. The following articles will share both the experiences
of Mary Jane Tolley and Danny
Danko ’69 and their thoughts on We
Are Marshall:
